AMEX Green Card

Hi Everyone,

I was not smart and opened an AMEX Green Card thinking I would benefit from it.  I did not research before I did it, I applied on the advice of one person (I won't do that again).  I have 5 statements on it as of October 9, 2018.  When can I close it and how much of an impact will it have on my scores?  I have over $200,000 in availabe credit if that helps.

Thanks for any help on this matter.

Re: AMEX Green Card

No worries. I did so when i got back in with Amex last year, though more so to test if i was still on bl. I would just let it ride until the AF is due then either close it or see as bout possible upgrade. I think i h as d like 3 charges the whole year so i dont think not using it wil matterSmiley Wink

Quick question on this-- is it possible to upgrade AMEX Green charge card to AMEX Gold charge card (I realize that I won't get the signup bonus this way but this would allow me to minimize impact on AAofA)?

Thanks!!

Im not sure about during its first year but for sure when the AF comes up you can request one or sometimes they have one for you.

Re: AMEX Green Card

Over the past 5 years I have sped several new, low-AF AMEX products, and have run a consistently strong amount of money through those various AMEX products. A lot of that spend was to earn SUB.

I have also received and accepted multiple Upgrade offers, with Upgrade bonuses comparable to the higher AF card SUB. So by using those Upgrade bonuses, I moved to the higher benefits, without a new app.

Delta Gold to Delta Platinum.
Hilton to Hilton $95 to Hilton $450
SPG to SPG Lux

No offer yet for an upgrade bonus Gold to Platinum but I hope for that.

With a Green, it may be that using the card heavily during the first no-AF year gets an upgrade bonus to Gold, after the AF. Or not. But in general, my suggestion is AMEX likes usage and has a lot of products that earn good rewards and/or provide nice perks, and a possible path to get to many of them.
High Bal Jan 2009 $116k on $146k limits 80% Util.
Oct 2014 $46k on $127k 36% util EQ 722 TU 727 EX 727
April 2018 $18k on $344k 5% util EQ 806 TU 810 EX 812
Jan 2019 $7.6k on $360k EQ 832 TU 839 EX 831
March 2021 $33k on $312k EQ 796 TU 798 EX 801
May 2021 Paid all Installments and Mortgages, one new Mortgage EQ 761 TY 774 EX 777

Re: AMEX Green Card

My first card was a green. I always saw my Dad with one so it seemed logical. For me it's a must keep because of back dating they did at the time. I got an extra 14 years. I use it every few months to keep it active.

Yes, but there also seems to be some noise.   Just got an offer to upgrade by BCE to BCP (no AF first year, SUB etc) and I haven't used my BCE in at least 2 years.

Re: AMEX Green Card

I had the Green from 2012 to 2016.  One measly MR per dollar spent was bad enough, but the MRs also posted a month or two late.  To make matters worse, none of the airline and hotel transfer partners interested me.  I closed it.  I don't miss it.

Re: AMEX Green Card

You must wait a full year to product change up the ladder. CC issuers are prohibited from changes terms during first year even if requested by the cardholder.
