AMEX Platinum reinstatement process after paying in full

Hello all,

After getting laid off at the beginning of 2023 and due to the yen hitting severe lows (I'm an American living in Japan and was working for a US company), I regrettably let my cards go into nonpayment. My AMEX platinum ended up getting cancelled — but, I immediately called AMEX and worked out a deal in which my account and all associated points would be reinstated if I paid the card balance in full. I cashed out part of my 401k to do so, and the account will be completely paid off as of today.

I was just wondering how the process works from here. Do I have to recieve a new card, or will my old card work? Does that also hold for my authorized user's card? Does the reinstatement take several days, weeks, or months?

I will also be saddled with a $5k spending limit. Any idea on how long it would take to have that limit removed, if at all?

Re: AMEX Platinum reinstatement process after paying in full

I had them put a biz plat on that plan once. After I paid it off I think their system said I had to wait either 6 or 12 months before applying for a new one. By then I wanted it under a different company anyway so I didn't ask out reactivating old one, just applied for new.  It didn't end up having any restrictions or pre set spending limit on it. Seemed to let me spend pretty freely as I never hit a wall but nowadays I pay down my limits a few times a month too so who knows

Re: AMEX Platinum reinstatement process after paying in full

Mmm, perhaps I explained this poorly — but what you described does not sound similar in anyway to what I was told my situation would be. I was told that if I paid the card off in full, my account would be reinstated with the same account number and same join date. I was also told that I would receive back all my membership points

At no point did they say I had to reapply, nor did they say it would take 6 to 12 months. The only thing was that, when my account was reinstated, I would have a credit limit instead of the unlimited credit limit I had before. I even asked the person before agreeing to the situation to confirm that I would be able to use an AMEX card with all privledges. They said that would indeed be the case.

I wasn't on some long extended payment plan. I paid a portion of the balance at the beginning of October and the rest of the balance on Friday.

If I have to reapply in a year after all this, then I was lied to.

Re: AMEX Platinum reinstatement process after paying in full

I'd give your final payment time to clear with them. Once you're confident it has cleared you should call back customer service to confirm the balance has been cleared and ask about the reinstatement. From there it should be anything from instant, to about 10 days for them to approve a reinstatement.

Have no idea about whether or not you'll be issued a new card with new number, or the old one will be reactivated. I believe that too is based on a certain time frame of when this all first occurred compared to when it was cleared up. Something you should ask them.
