AMEX Pre-approval/Prequalify

Is the AMEX prequalify or preapproval on their website a soft or hard pull??  I noticed that it asked for a lot of information for just a check to see if you have offers (address etc)!  I've been meaning to ask this for a while.  No plans to apply, just would like to check if I have offers in the next few months, but definatly do not want to check if it's not a soft pull.

It's not a HP for certain; however, I don't think it's necessarily a soft pull either.

I hit that pre-qual link for giggles at one point, and then a few months later pulled a EX report: nada.  It's highly unlikely they would've checked any other bureau with my living in CA.  No prior accounts of any sort with Amex then.

You won't get a score ding, it is definately not a hard pull.

I don't believe this is even a SP, I think this is just them checking their systems for any offers they qualified you for when they buy info. from the bureaus.

Re: AMEX Pre-approval/Prequalify

I agree with LS. I've done the preapproval thing a few times on the AMEX website and they haven't softed me yet.

Re: AMEX Pre-approval/Prequalify

Definitely not a HP, but I do believe it's a soft. I think it's a "PR" soft vs. an "AR" soft. So, they don't get your entire report, but they get enough data to give them an idea of what you might qualify for.

I am opted out and repeatedly tried their pre-approval site and it never worked for me, so I do believe they are checking your credit report to some degree.

I've checked my EX softs a few days after doing the prequalifier with AMEX and nothing shows up. Smiley Indifferent

Hi LS2982,

How do you see your EXP credit report softs as I belong to Experian Credit Tracker and only shows hard inquiries? Which credit report monitoring service if I may ask?

Thanks!

I've been told in the past that it is not recommended to give out that info. on the forums. There is a "backdoor" way to get the info.
