Easy there, Nostradamus. I literally did this 9 days ago. People have been doing this all the time for years; it's quick and easy by chat.

Seeing is believing. Screenshot taken just now:
I wasn't talking about upgrades.
And neither was the OP.
The OP was talking about a product change from the BCE to the Cash Magnet.
If OP had been talking about an upgrade from BCE to the BCP, my answer would have been different. In fact, my answer would have been that you don't need a phone call or chat, you could just click on one of the ubiquitous upgrade links of which American Express is so fond.

You can absolutely do a product change from and to BCE, BCP, or even Blue (the one that came with the free chip reader that plugs into your Windows 98, ME, or 2000 computer's parallel port) via chat. An upgrade is a product change. Upgrades, downgrades, and (in the atypical place Cash Magnet holds with the Blue cash back and MR cards) sidegrades are the only types of product changes that Amex allows. They would never give you an offer to do anything but upgrade to a card with an annual fee (or higher annual fee) when doing product changes, no matter the medium you use.
By "product change" I only meant to address what you call "sidegrades", such as the one OP seeks, which you confirm are never the subject of offers.
As to whether you can do a "sidegrade" by chat, I don't know, as I said in my initial post. I doubt it, but I defer to your greater Amex knowledge. If you say it can be done by chat, so be it. In my experience, any time I've tried to do anything with them through chat which is not routine, I've been referred to a phone number.

I recently upgraded my AMEX Bonvoy to the AMEX Brilliant card. By upgrading I received no SUB but since AMEX is reporting that account as opened 36 yrs ago, maintaining the length of credit history on that account was far more important to me than cashing in on a SUB by applying for a new account.
