I opened a BCP on June 10th 2025. I met the SUB requirement for a $300 statement credit. I requested a product change to a BCE on June 9th 2026 around 9:30 PM to avoid the $95 AF. (I mistakenly thought that it was a no annual fee card at the time of applying) They approved the request and said it would take effect on June 10th, 2026. I received a marketing-based email at 3:09 PM the next day which still referred to my account as a BCP. Then I received another email at 8:46 PM acknowledging that my account has been officially PC’d from BCP to BCE. The app was updated as well.
My question is will they claw back SUB for not having the account opened for at least 12 months before product changing? I asked for a conversion on day 365 but the conversion didn’t take place until day 366. If they do claw back the SUB, how would that work since it was a Statement Credit SUB? I've seen DP's of negative MR points after a clawback but none for statement credit clawbacks.
Not sure if it's relevant but I have NOT not seen an Annual Fee charge on the account as of June 13th. I also have a relationship with AMEX going back to 2018. I have no history of closing cards/churning with AMEX or any other banks.
Thanks in advance for any advice/ replies.
I am sure that they would not claw back SUB in your case. Why? Because- (1) the conversation officially took place on 366 days which alone would prevent them from clawing the SUB, (2) almost every creditor doesn't follow this rule of -"not closing account within 12 months"...I have done this many times with Amex on many accounts with them and even with 2 cards with Citi Bank...Nobody ever clawed back the SUB. My case was more worst because I did not convert nor converstion/PCd took place AFTER 365 days, rather I closed those account in 10 months, but before closing those accounts prior to 12 months I did chat with their customer service reps to ask if I would close the accounts then SUB will not be clawed back....and all agents consistently answered NO....I kept the record of those chat to prove that I closed accounts prior to 12 months based on the information provided to me by those agents if ever SUB would have been clawed back. But it never happened. So, all I can say is- nothing to worry about.
They are not going to claw back your sub whether you are in pop up jail and not eligible for another sub on another card with Amex for awhile certainly could be true or not depending. You are fine they aren't going to ask for you to give back 300$ it isn't MR's etc that you have in your account still etc and you didn't really play the system even if you knew about the AF when applied.
