AMEX card questions

I got my AMEX Everyday card about a week ago. I've read quite a bit about AMEX but I just want to clarify a couple of things.

First, my card says "Member since 15" because I just got approved. However, when I log in on my smartphone app, it says "Member since 99" because I had an AMEX card way back then. Unfortunately, it was back when I was young and it was charged off long ago. When my Everyday card starts to report, will it backdate or how does that work? I read that the charge off won't matter because at this point they have extended me credit again. Right?

I've noticed that some people have multiple AMEX cards. Does that typically help or hurt your AMEX credit? By help, I mean are they more willing to give higher initial limits on a second or third card since you already have a relationship with the company? And by hurt, I mean does it hinder your credit limits since the cards come from the same company and maybe they won't want to extend too much credit to one person with multiple cards?

Also, how does having multiple AMEX cards affect your first card's CLI eligibility (the 61 days and 6 month dates)?

Thanks.

Re: AMEX card questions

The backdating is a good thing; it will raise your AAoA on your credit report and should boost your score. Having multiple Amex won't really hurt your relationship with them. They will extend you credit to what they see meets both yours and their criteria for responsible credit practices. Relationship building is the key, so just make sure you pay your cards on time, keep your balances in check, etc, and your CL will grow and grow. Yes,you can CLI on a new amex at 61. Worst that can happen is they deny it. Its an SP anyway. Good luck!

Re: AMEX card questions

Now, will the backdating be automatic once the card begins to report or do I need to talk to a csr? Does the date on the actual card really not matter?

1) That is correct the CR will show it being open since 99 giving you 15 years of extra AAoA.. If you would like your card to show the correct date then call them or chat with them online and they will mail you out one showing 99.  Otherwise what the site shows is what will be reflect on your CR.

With regards to you second question different cards serve different purposes such as Delta I got to get in with Amex and 35 bonus miles w/delta (free fight) and the ED serves another purpose (Prime membership and 10k MR Signup bonus).

1. Since it says 1999 online, that is the date in their system and should be the date that gets reported. however, you should check when it hits your CR after your first statement. You can request an updated card with the accurate date if you won't but for reporting purposes, it doesn't really matter.

2. Not sure how much of a role the charge off still plays but since they have extended you credit again, I can't imagine it's that big of a deal.

3. Most lenders do have some sort of internal limit of total credit that they're willing to extend you but there's nothing wrong with going up to that limit with multiple cards and CLIs. Multiple Amex cards, especially with your MSD, will actually help your credit score substantially since they will all report as opened in 1999, increasing your AAoA.

4. I believe that the 61 days/3X CLI is independent on each card but I could be wrong about that.

That would be incorrect actually..   You can only request 3x61 or 3x181 or whatever it is for one Amex card.  They treat your whole CL across multiple cards kinda as one.  So choose wisely

Re: AMEX card questions

I was in a similar situation where my original MSD was 1998, credit went to heck for about 10 years and when I got back in it initially had 2010 as my new MSD. I called and asked about it and they basically said too bad, no indication of 1998 in their system.

Well a few weeks later I noticed my date online changed to 1998. A few subsequent approvals came with the non-backdated MSD on the card, but they always reported as 1998 open date. It's the best benefit of Amex in my opinion.

Ah okay I couldn't remember but that would make sense.

If this is your first AMEX after that prior charge off, congratulations! Well, congratulations anyway for getting the AMEX, but sometimes there are issues that keep them from issuing a card.

Now that you have another AMEX, your usage and payment patterns are going to define your relationship with AMEX going forward. What initial CL did you get on the ED? I would work on using and paying this card for several months before trying for another AMEX, if that is on your plans. You will have better luck with the next app after waiting for more payment history to develop, instead of rushing into another app too soon.

The 61 day 3X CLI, you should be able to do that with no issues.

For people with more than one AMEX, the timing to get to the 3X CLI is; the new card has to pass 61 days, and there must be 6 months from the time any other AMEX card has had a 3x CLI. So if you have 3 AMEX cards, and one takes a 3X CLI, then all three cards must wait 6 months before any one of those cards (or any new card that passed its 61 day wait) would be able to ask for another CLI.

Perhaps, but I would think giving the card holder a lot of control over increasing the CL, through the 3X CLI, has more real value to people. Backdating is interesting, but with most other cards, the limit you get is pretty much the limit you are stuck with for a long time.
