So my first statement hasn't cut on my AMEX yet. I made one payment a couple days ago, paid my cell phone bill with the AMEX to get the promotion, and then went back to try and pay off the cell phone bill. I keep getting "payment not required at this time." The charges ARE posted. I did some searches around here (most results from 2012) saying they limit you mid-cycle payments when you're new. I'm guessing this is still the case? Anyway around this? My statement cuts the 6th and I was really trying to pay this off.

Odd. They let me make a payment before my first statement was generated. The website did say payment was not required but I was still able to make one without any problems.
However, unless you need to free up your credit limit, you can wait until your statement is generated. Or have the money pushed through from your bank.
I was able to make 1 payment, but not 2. ![]()
I ran into this problem with the BCP. I'm an authorized user that made the charges and it had been posted for awhile. It would not let me pay it. Just kept saying AmEx payment not required at this time. Logged on under my wife and was able to make the payment with no problem. No sure what the issue was.
They'll limit you until your account ages. The way around it is to push a payment thru with the bill payment option from your bank or just wait. Not really a huge issue just to wait until the payment is due and you get to take advantage of the grace period.
I'm working on keeping my util down, so that's a bummer. Oh well
1. No need to worry about reporting a zero balance before the first statement cuts because Amex is slow to report (new accounts report to CRAs shortly after 2nd or 3rd statement cut)
2. You don't need to pay off the cell phone bill to receive the promotional discount (I charged a cell phone bill and I was given the 10% off two days after it posted).

1. is a good point! They ARE slow to report. Thanks!
You can call and make a phone payment. The CSR's can make a addition payment when your account is new.
You can force a payment through your bank's online bill pay program. In my experience, if you pay though bill pay Amex accepts the payment and credits your account even when it isn't allowing a payment on the website.
