AMEX upgrade hard pull?

If one were to apply to upgrade an AMEX card, ie Delta to Delta Gold, would that result in a hard pull?  Or would it be similar to a credit line increase where they use the current Experian on your account.

@mich800 , @Remedios is correct.

You mean Delta Blue to DeltaGold? No HP.

No SUB neither... are you ineligible for a SUB on Delta Gold?  That's a lot of SkyPesos to pass up in the current offer. A HP would be well compensated if you can get the SUB.

Re: AMEX upgrade hard pull?

That's a good point @NRB525 - the SkyMiles SUB is quite tempting.

Does it help to be signed into your Amex account and then apply ?

I heard that being signed into your account while upgrading usually gives a SP ??

Re: AMEX upgrade hard pull?

While most existing cardholders report not receiving a HP (my last one was in 2002), it does happen from time to time.  Doing the application while signed in does typically result in a much shorter application form, though.

Re: AMEX upgrade hard pull?

@K-in-Boston Interesting that you mention that.  I applied for the Platinum card a few months ago to get the 100k/10x sub.  Prior to that I hadn't applied for an Amex product in almost 2 years.  I did get a ding from monitoring that Amex attempted to pull my EX.

Maybe it had been mentioned here and I overlooked the data point but they did indeed pull my report (had to call in to have it manually processed since my report was locked at the time). So HPs does happen even as an existing customer which I have never experienced in the past.

Re: AMEX upgrade hard pull?

While logged in I went from Hilton Surpass to Hilton Aspire. No HP; if fact my reports were frozen when I did it. A few minutes after the approval, I also did a 3x cli and was approved. No HP.

Re: AMEX upgrade hard pull?

I've never gotten an HP for an upgrade or product change from any issuer.  I would think as it's not a request for new or additional credit, it shouldn't need any credit pull.
