Above Average scores but having a hard time getting my first CC :(

Hi All,

First let me say I am really stoked about joining myFico.com. I think these forums are great ! Needless to say, I was wondering if any of you guys have any advice for someone like myself. My fico scores are decent and I am having a hard time getting approved for any CC's. My TU 705 EX 705 EQ 670. I have been denied for Discover, Chase Freedom and Citi Bank Simplicity cards. I even tried getting a regular gas card with Exxon. When I recieved the letters in the mail I was denied because of too many inquiries Smiley Sad . I know that I can wait until those inquiries drop off in a couple of years, but who wants to wait that long!!? I pulled my credit after the denials and I have 7 inquiries of which all I ok'd to pull my credit. Do any of you guys have any advice as to what I can do to get my first unsecured CC? I am thinking to go into the store and apply for a Macys store card. Is this a smart thing to do or should I just wait? I just want to get some revolving credit  so my scores will continue to climb.... Any advice will help....Any cards that any of you can think I can apply for and have a good chance of getting ...even with 7 inquires on file???

Are you a student and do you have a good income?

I am not a student.... my income is 60K . Just never have really used credit much in my life. This place has really helped me understand what to do and what not to do. Thanks for replying to my post.

My suggestion would be to join a credit union such as DCU.

You can apply for membership, and then get started with one of their secured credit cards.  After 6 months of responsible use, you should be able to get an unsecured credit card.

Where are you getting your scores from?

Also, I have moved this post to the Credit Card forum, so that you might get better responses.

I would wait until your secured card has 6 months of positive history and also consider Increasing the deposit on the card. Let your latest INQ age 6 months and like webhopper suggested try a local credit union.

Good luck to you!!

+1 regarding DCU but get your membership first.

You might want to see if you can be added as AU on a relatives cc to assist you with some positive history.

Re: Above Average scores but having a hard time getting my first CC :(

I was in kinda the same situation but my scores where lower then yours. Here is what I did. Last year april I got the secured card with cap one it was $200 cl. I increased that limit over the year to $750. I then made sure (which I do all the time) I PIF before I applied for the cap one cash rewards. Boom instante approved for $500. I called and denied cli so I went the EO route, Boom $1500 cli before I had the card 2 weeks. Then I applied for discover it. I got a message saying call in, but to register online. I set up my username and account, then thru a post here ls or someone else told me to call now I did and boom $1700 dollar cl. I increased my credit by $3200 in less then 1 month. I say this because you need to work on that secured card more and increase the limit. One thing that got me my discover is that I did have the 2 cap one cards and one was $1500 limit if not I think I would have gotten the $500 cl. I would apply for the cap one cash rewards seems you should get approved tho with those scores already

Re: Above Average scores but having a hard time getting my first CC :(

only that EQ score is an actual fico score. ignore the TU and EX score. even if those scores were accurate, a 705 score is actually pretty average; fact is most people actually have a good to excellent fico score
