Account Opened Without Knowledge

I would like to know how can I get two credit card accounts deleted from my account.  In 1998 I joined the military and was stationed in NC.  I am from Alabama.  During the time I was gone 1998-2002, my mom opened up several credit card accounts without my knowledge or consent.  I didn't find until I wanted to purchase a home.  These accounts were opened in 1999.  One my mom paid off without my knowledge and took a settlement.  The other was paid and closed but there are some late payments on there that's affecting my credit.  I would like to know how do I get these removed from my report.

You may try GW letters asking for help...all they can do is say no!

While I assume you aren't going to turn in your own mother, you need to have a SERIOUS talk with her. (if you haven't already) What she did is both identity theft and fraud.

Re: Account Opened Without Knowledge

I know and now have been using the score watch for a while.  I also check my credit report regularly.  The reason I never really checked my credit report before is because I didn't have credit cards and didn't apply for credit.  The only thing I had was a automobile loan and a cable acct.  Back then I was single and didn't think anything about credit since I didn't really use it.  It wasn't until I met my wife and she started asking me about interest rates on my car and then applying for a VA loan and finding out I was approved but on the condition that I clear up a couple of things on my credit report and I was stunned to find 5 credit cards opened in my name and when I asked my mom about it she admitted it.  I had never applied for a credit card until last year when I applied for an AMEX Gold Rewards card.  Never felt the need for one, but my wife told me that I need to have one just in case I'm somewhere and need to book a flight or rent a car, etc and it's good to have to help build my credit.

But of course the wife had suggested that I report my mother because that was identity theft.

It's tough when it's a family member. It sounds like you have precautions in place to keep it from happening again, and I completely understand not wanting to file a police report, which you would have to do. So I agree that you're reduced to GW, and/or waiting until the baddies fall off.

The charge-off is pretty unpleasant, but lates aren't all that awful, depending on how late they were (30-day, 60-day, etc.), and how long ago they were. How old is all this stuff? And how are your scores?

One possibility, if she will do it, is to have your mom write companion GW letters to your own. Maybe that will help. Good luck!

Not only would I file a police report, I would sue for damages.

Re: Account Opened Without Knowledge

USMC,

Best of luck. We just recently had good luck getting a late pmt deleted on an acc't that was my DH's, but his sister was in charge of paying off while we were overseas. (We had an allotment to her account, she paid the bill each month). She made a boo-boo and made one pmt really really late and the company gave us a GW adjustment because we had put our faith in the sister to take care of it for us.

Hopefully they will be as understanding for you.

And this is why Timothy got a settlement from the TC fiasco...
Fear Him.

It does sound like GW'ing is your best/only option though.  If they were opened in 99 and she defaulted on them quickly they may be close to falling off...

Thanks cheddar-
Yes - Stay on my good side-

For the record I have never posted in this forum that I recieved a settlement.  The terms of my dismissed lawsuit prevent me from disclosing any details.
