You might want to enroll in Chase Credit Journey if you have not already. While it offers yet another FAKO score, preapprovals do happen for many who are enrolled.

when i try to sign up for that they demand a cell#. could i put a home phone number there instead or do they text message a verification code to prevent that?

That I am not sure of since I use my Chase login for it.  They might text verification codes and enroll you in SMS alerts (which you should be able to opt out of).

if there's an sms verification before they let you login i won't be able to join it. i don't have a chase card so i can't log in that way. i don't want to give them my cell# even for a second, trying to keep telemarketers at bay.

I've been a Chase customer for over 12 years and they have had my cell phone number the entire time.  I have never received a single phone call from Chase, marketing or account related.  Chase does make frequent use of SMS for verifying your identity either when a cookie has been deleted or expired in your browser or when doing certain things over the phone.  You may not have a very good experience with them if all of your correspondence with them and payments need to be made via mail and are unable to use their mobile app.
