AmEx payment issue?

I’m wondering if anyone has encountered an issue where the amount of a credit card payment, scheduled for a future date via the AmEx website, has been altered? I scheduled a payment in late February for mid-March and the amount processed was approximately half of what it should have been.

I’ve contacted AmEx about this, obviously, and I also made an additional payment (which was, unfortunately, after the statement closing date, hello interest and trailing interest, as well as a large balance, so much for AZEO). The representatives I’ve spoken with are saying it will be weeks before they can offer any insight as to what occurred. I thought I’d check here and see if anyone has had similar experiences.

I've never had or heard of anybody having a problem like that.

American Express is one of the few creditors I allow to pull the payment (I pay from their website or app each month).

When you made your payment, what amount was on the email confirmation they sent?

My American Express bill has been set up (since I got my American Express credit card almost two years ago) to pay automatically by the due date via automatic deduction from my checking account. I have had no surprises. Maybe your short turnaround between late February and mid-March has something to do with it.

This is the crux of the issue.  If they told you that they were going to process a certain dollar amount, but later changed it, you have a legitimate beef with them, but if they did what they told you they were going to do, then the mistake falls on your shoulders.

Re: AmEx payment issue?

I’m just guessing here but I wonder if it had anything to do with Feb being a short month. So a few questions:

Min due and Due date

Stmt closing date

Auto payment date/amount

Outstanding Balance

Did you change anything at all on the autopay?

Did you get a credit?

Did you make a payment in between. Some CCCs will adjust auto payments if minimum has been met.

Just brainstorming

Re: AmEx payment issue?

So more details - I scheduled the payment 2/24 to go through on my next payday 3/1 (sorry, thought it was the following week until I checked) for the previous statement balance, $898.84, and have the confirmation email showing the exact amount I authorized, recorded on my statement, and recorded on my checking account. Min payment due was $35. Just after scheduling that payment I redeemed $805.22 rewards dollars (this is BCP) which apparently posted on 2/25.

The payment amount that was deducted (credited on 3/1 but shows as 3/4 in my checking acct) was $482.33 instead, leaving me with an unpaid statement balance from the Feb statement since the rewards dollars can’t be used to satisfy that, as shown on their site by the “previous statement balance due” when I logged in a after the payment went through.

Here is where I was unusually remiss - I didn’t log in until the 14th to check on things, statement due date was the 12th. I was traveling and life was hectic, and in years of having AMEX pull payments I’ve never experienced an issue, so I trusted everything would be fine - my mistake.

As soon as I noticed what had happened, I contacted AmEx, and simultaneously paid the current balance of $559.69 to be pulled from my bank account. The rep I spoke with insisted I had changed the payment due amount, but I had neither logged in to the site nor received notification that the scheduled payment had been altered.

I am the only one with access to the account, online or otherwise. I have never changed a payment once scheduled and didn’t do it here. The second rep I spoke with (I called back to close the account, I was so angry that the first csr had all but called me a liar) was able to see that I hadn’t accessed the account between those log-ins (first said this was not info they have access to) and was able to see that no updated pmt email ever went out - because I never updated it. Lol

I inquired about whether it might have to do with the credit to the account and not allowing a payment for more than the current balance. Both reps assured me this was not the issue, the first rep going so far as to say I could make a pmt for $5k over my current balance and it would go through just fine, as long as it cleared my bank.

This is the weirdest thing I’ve ever had happen with a payment and it concerns me greatly that a payment amount was altered without my consent or knowledge. I should also note I didn’t not receive an email when the credit posted, all I have is the initial email from 2/24 thanking me for scheduling the pmt amount I authorized. Oh, and no other payments in between the ones described above. Hope this info helps.

Thanks for the details. This really is weird. If you haven’t closed account, I suggest just start pushing payments from your checking account until you receive their written response in a few weeks on exactly what occurred on their end. This is frustrating.

Re: AmEx payment issue?

Probably had something to do with the cashback redemption, which logically should reduce your payment (and other credit card issuers will adjust scheduled payments for credits), but Amex seems to have a strange policy (https://ficoforums.myfico.com/t5/Credit-Cards/Amex-statement-credits-vs-statement-balance/m-p/547948...) that could be confusing their own programmers
