I just got approved for a BCP with initial SL of $10,000. I'm planning on asking for a CLI on day 61, however, my income is $40,000. I'm wondering if they would realistically up my SL to $30,000 with that income level? I have a Discover It card with a $22,200 limit, but they've been getting less and less with the increases the last few times I've asked. Does anyone have any data points or previous experience from a similar situation?
I don't know what limit you could get, but I do know that if they don't want to give you the full 3x they will counter with their best offer, so no worries about overshooting.
All of the above answers are really good advice. IIRC, I had around $25K CL on my amex when I was only making $30K.
If you try 30,000 they may counter somewhere in the middle ($20,000). If you just ask for $25,000 you may get approved right away. It is sort of a juggling act. If you hit hit the sweet spot with your request it will be approved. From personal experiecne the 3X limit is usually only approved when you have about $10,000 or less. Once you get to your next amount, you will be very hard pressed to get a 3X CLI without a financial review, but they usually still offer a counter. Say you get approved for $30,000 with this request. I wouldnt shoot for $90K b.c that is very unlikely.
From what I've read about Amex 3X CLIs (which is a lot considering I've read the entire monster 3X CLI thread) it's always best to shoot for the stars. In the example above, if the OP's magic number is "$25k" whether he asks for $25k, $30k, $40k, etc. in theory he should be countered with $25k as that's the predetermined number based on his credit profile/score/spend/etc. The same thing is true when you get to higher numbers up to the point where IV comes into play. If you get prompted for IV, you back the request amount down by $1k and try again and continue this process until you reach your magic number which yields an approval.
I went from a $10k SL to $30k at Day 64 on my BCE, but my declared income with Amex at the time was around $75k. I know some people with around $50k income were able to move from $10k to $30k, but I don't know about $40k going off of memory on the subject.

It'd likely be proof of income rather than financial review. Proof of income is relatively painless outside of being nosier than what some people might be comfortable with. Financial review is a big fat drag.
I'm in a similar position to the OP, having been approved for a starting limit of $15,000 with a moderate annual income. Thinking in terms of that, I see $45,000 as an unlikely approval. As for a second 3X CLI, I certainly can't see myself with a $135,000 limit at any point.
So I think I'm going to make my initial request based on a number that my monthly charges can justify. If I think I can support a higher limit after another 181 days, I'll make a request accordingly at that point.
