I am looking to purchase some apple accessories for the new iPhone. Are there any data points of Amex having issues or frowning down with reloading your apple balance with the Amex BCP and getting 6% cash back under the streaming category? I have read that Amex have issues with gift card abuse. Thank you.
According to this post here on reddit any purchases on apple.com codes as streaming since AMEX cannot differentiate an iTunes purchase and buying a phone as an example. Related you can always purchase an Apple gift card from the grocery store and still get the 6% that way in reloading your Apple balance. The abuse AMEX looks for leads more towards cash equivalent gift cards like Visa/MC since there are methods of liquidating them for MS purposes. Merchant specific cards like Apple, Netflix, and restaurants like Chilis as a few examples are more tolerable. I'll leave it to our Apple users to chime in here to see what is best for your situation
There is a difference between purchases on the Apple Store and those done through iTunes.
One codes as streaming (iTunes) and the other codes as a regular purchase (Apple Store purchase).
I have experienced both scenarios this year. (Merchant reads as "APPLE.COM/BILL" vs APPLE.COM/US)
You can nab the 6% bonus by reloading your account balance and using that to purchase the accessories from within the store. I've reloaded a few times each year for the last couple of years. No problems.

Wait a tic, you mean I can be earning 6% on dining as well!? Not that dining out is even an option right now. lol
But it would be nice to earn 6% on Dominos, Pizza Hut etc.

Yep. A roundabout way for sure but yes
