Just curious if anyone here has any idea about the "exceeds allowable limits".
I have 2 Amex cards
Platinum - NPSL
Business Gold - NPSL
Cash Magnet - 50K
Blue Cash Everyday (No AF Card) - 26800 (the below one).
The limit before this CLI increase was 23700, I requested 30K but Amex countered me with the below amount.
AGI 2021: 450K
I'm guessing you asked more than they're willing to give you
Sounds like you've reached your internal limit with them.
You've reached your max credit limit across all AmEx cards that they are willing to extend to you. Pretty common and not "cryptic" at all really.
It's less cryptic than some I've seen. They have a maximum amount of credit they're willing to extend, and you've reached it. Based on your post you have a total TCL of $100,500 with them now, which is impressive to say the least.
Now the letter I just got from BoFA after my recent CLI request is similar. Like you, I requested a high amount and they countered. The reason they gave is "The amount of credit extended to you by us and/or our affiliates meets or exceeds our maximums." But they only bumped me up to $6,800, so I don't know what "maximum" I'm meeting. Maybe just the amount they were willing to extend at one time. But, not very clear as to the real reason.

Except AmEx's response did not specify "across all AmEx cards", as you did. Sparse with words, it still leaves a lot of unanswered questions for the card holder, whom, until "asking the audience" had very little info on part of the lender.

You hit the nail on the head and you're in the same position as the OP. In each case BoA/AMEX was willing to increase your credit limit but what you asked for was more than the maximum internal limit that they calculated they were willing to reach. In both cases they made a counteroffer consistent with reaching that maxinum calculated amount. At some point in the future if your credit history and your usage justify it they will be willing to extend you more.

While I agree, I can see it can appear cryptic to some. "Allowable limit" might suggest some (federal) regulations etc, whereas in fact it is totally in Amex's power to give whatever limit they want. So OP just needs to understand that "allowable limit" is a) individualized and b) can increase at any time as credit report and history improve in some way
