Amex - CLI request question

I just received a new Amex and noticed the Check Your Spending Ability link where it asks, "How much would you like to spend?"  Is this to request a CLI?  Is it recommended to call them instead?  I'm not about to request one right now but I'm just curious.  Thanks in advance.

Re: Amex - CLI request question

It is basically computer determines based on your debt and history with them. You probably will get the same answer even if you call CSR.

Re: Amex - CLI request question

So when it asks how much you "want to spend" you have to enter a number that's higher than your current CL or you enter a number of how number of how much you want to be increased?

Are you using a Charge card? If so, that's just there to see how much you can spend. I believe you're allowed to check 3x a day. It doesn't hurt your account in anyway, it's there just to let you know your spending ability before you make a big purchase.

Re: Amex - CLI request question

No, I'm not using a charge card and I do have a limit.  There isn't a number there.  You have to type in a number yourself.

Re: Amex - CLI request question

i recently tried the 'check your spending ability' feature.  current CL 3000.  i requested to spend some large $ amount, and it said i could not.

immediately called their automated system and there's a CLI option there, so i tried for 5500 CL and instantly got it.

so i'm not sure if you can get CLI using that button, but it did not work for me even though i got CLI right after that on the phone.

Re: Amex - CLI request question

I used it the other day on my Starwood card.  Put in an amount larger than my total credit line and hit submit.  The website said charge approved so I figured what the heck, seems like they're open to a CLI.  Called in, put in my income and desired line, and got approved instantly for an increase from $2,000 to $4,000.

USAA World MasterCard - $14,500
American Express SPG - $20,000
NFCU CashRewards Visa Sig - $20,000
PenFed Platinum Rewards Visa - $5,000
