Re: Amex Cards Questions

I was just approved for a Blue Cash.  Not sure what the CL is because it didn't say.  I will call Monday and find out.  I have a 700+.  They said they couldn't find any cards for me, but I applied anyway.

Barclays US Air $17K| TTCU $15K| Citi Diamond $10.5K| Discover IT $9000| CapOne $2K| Best Buy $2K

Re: Amex Cards Questions

If it's the form where you are only entering the last 4 digits of your SSN then it's a SP.   And yes, the preapproval isn't a guarantee.  For example my offers said green, gold, and Everyday.  The shot me down for the Everyday but it took them 7 days to think about it.  Amex's tool isn't just marketing garbage like some other sites.  You just have to pay attention to the message at the top.  It may say something like "No offers for you pleb, but here are some cards that might interest you..." which of course is not a preapproval.  I think this is where some of the stories may come from.  But I cannot deny that in my case they baited me and denied me.  I was paying attention. That's just the way it goes sometimes.  If all you want is _any_ revolver, then see if the preapproval tool gives you some good ones, then you can be pretty confident that if you apply for the lowest/easiest one you'd stand a good chance.

I almost guarantee the preapproval tool is a lot more accurate than a bunch of bozos on the internet throwing guesses at you.

Just filled out the PreQualified info and it states:

Joseph, We have found the following special Card offers for you. We invite you to apply for one today.
Please note: Identification of special offers may have included a review of your credit history that was not based on your most current credit bureau data.

Selected Cards:

  • American Express Green Card
  • American Express Gold Card
  • Amex Everyday Credit Card

Not sure if me selecting the interest in Travel Benefits option had anything to do with the Blue Cash not being offered

Re: Amex Cards Questions

You can go back and do it again as many times as you want and select cash back, etc as your preference and see if it makes a difference.

That selection doesn't scream approval to me, especially if you are paranoid about burning a HP and getting turned down.  Certainly people get approved for cards all the time though that didn't show up as an offer.  I dunno what your credit details are like, but if you'll be in any better shape by December that would be just as good a time to apply.

Sounds like you think you don't have a good chance, or else you wouldn't be here asking about lowest possible score.  You have baddies and such?  Or are you just conservative with your HPs?  If you gave some details about your credit situation I'm sure others would be able to offer guesses at your approval chances.  Score isn't everything with amex.

Didn't scream out approval to me either, I'm in no rush though.. Trying to play the patience game so I can get the best approval but as you can see I'm getting anxious.

The reason I ask is because I'll be going on an app spree in about 6 months and Amex Blue Cash is one of the cards I'll be aiming at or Delta Gold. I only have 3 cards and my total CL is only 4,600. So I think Amex's 3x can really open the door for me.

I never truly knew my Fico scores as I always went by Fako scores untill I got the last few baddies off my report. When I started a year and half ago my FAKO was 537 and now i'm at 683. AAoA is about 3 years and income at the moment is 56k but will be close to 95k once I finish the schooling my job has put me in. I can't risk any HP's but will have 2 fall off Jan. So I figure 6 months to let my accounts age, keep PIF each month, try to get the last few baddies removed and let 2 INQ fall off before I make my app spree in Jan/Feb. I'll be sure to pay for all three FICO reports prior.

So far the cards on my agenda are:

  • Amex Blue Cash or Delta Gold
  • Chase Freedom
  • Discover IT
  • Sallie Mae
  • Walmart or BestBuy

Why not go to Amex's site and see what they show you for preapproved offers?  That should give you an idea.  If all they show you is the green/gold and the Everyday then that's probably not a good sign.

I was thinking about it but wassn't 100% sure if it was a HP or just a SP.

Plus, I hear people get preapproved online all the time only to get denied when actually app'ing

Pre-approval isn't everything. It certainly helps, but like you said, people can still be denied. And just because you don't get pre-approved for anything doesn't mean you will get denied if you app for it. I did NOT get pre-approved when I apped for any of my cards.

1.  I was approved with a 647.  That's pretty darn low for Amex, lower than most approvals I've seen around here, but it was still instant.  So there's room below that even.

2. Green/Gold charge cards, take your pick they are equally easy to get

That is pretty low, I was thinking a min of 700 ATLEAST. You possibly had other factors that helped you, do you know what they were?

700?  No!   Amex charge cards are fairly easy to get (although 647 does seem somewhat low).   They are far from exclusive these days
