How can a person applying tell the difference between the ‘Charge Card’ and the credit card from Amex??

American Express Charge cards are the Green, Gold, Platinum, and Black/Centurion. All other cards are revolvers.

Thank you very much!! B/c I was confused!...lol
Now one more piece to the question, which are best and/or easier to apply for?
All are easy to apply for.
What is best is up to you! We're all different here.
I, personally, have no use for a charge card. It doesn't benefit me. There are lots of folks that make good use of them.
Please research your options on Amex's website BEFORE you apply for something...choose the one that fits YOU the best, and see if you prequalify for it.
The underwriting for the charge card and credit card is very lot different. Here are some scenario.
"Ok" Credit and trying to get your foot in the door ? - American Express Gold Charge card - MUST PAY OFF EVERY MONTH.
Excellent credit, and if you want the flexibility to carry a balance ? all you have to decide is if you want Hotel benefits or Delta benefits - Apply
"Ok" Credit = Now the best part is, if you apply and get approved for the Gold card, within the hour apply for a Delta Gold Credit Card and you should be approved for that as well, if not no big deal because they will use the SAME credit, and they WILL approve you for a revolver and a charge card with the same pull.
Hope this helps.

That charge cards were easier to get approved for used to be 'common wisdom', but more recently (last year or so) we've seen people get approved for revolvers (credit) cards and denied for the charge cards, so it's not quite as easy to predict as it once was. Some still might suggest that charge cards are easier to qualify for, but at this time I would say YMMV.
In-a-nutshell, I would recommend for someone to apply for the card that would serve them the best, not the one that was the easiest to qualify for. To put it another way, if you apply for a card that's not a good match for your needs it won't do you much good even if you are approved.
agreed
Not to mention that the Gold card no longer has the first year's annual fee waived. You're paying $250 right off the bat now. I got my Hilton Amex with an Experian score of 660 and very high utilization. General consensus is that the two cards with the softest underwriting criteria are the Hilton and Delta cards.

...and their related cobrand cards.
The names don't always make it obvious. The Mercedes-Benz Amex Platinum (recently closed to new apps, I think) is a charge card while the Delta Amex Platinum is a credit card.
