I'd do the 50k deal, then upgrade down the road.
Well I just closed my Gold in June, so can't do that one and from the T&C only the Platinum gives the companion pass. The Platinum has a 50k plus 15k MQM bonus after $1k spend. $100 statement credit with first Delta purchase (gift cards seem to work).
I had kind of written Delta miles off, but out of the big 3 carriers, they're probably the least likely to devalue anytime soon.
well i heard rumor they are going to follow suit and do revenue based and drop distance based i think. I am not the biggest fan of flying domestic airlines if i don't have to .
I thought it did change to revenue based for 2015?
Agree on US Domestics, with the exception of Virgin America. If only LH operated DTW-LAX

Well for me i would fly Virgin america every single time Domestic with award travel because since almost every airline is 25k for econ, why not fly the best domestic airline. Its not 2015 yet so it hasn't changed i don't think lol. Its an bummer that delta have virgin australia and virgin atlantic as partners, but no virgin america so sad.

Well August is almost over so naturally I've written 2014 off haha.
I did find a review on doctorofcredit and it does confirm you can get each bonus as long as you've never had the card you're applying for currently or before. I could really use more Hilton points, but my options are limited since backdating is the priority on this one.

Go to delta.com, and go for their basic blue. 5k bonus for 1st purchase, then upgrade to another tier down the way?
How often do they offer you card upgrade bonuses? I've heard of people doing it with the Hilton cards (no-AF, then upgrade to Surpass for 50k, then downgrade again, etc...).
The full blown technicality of what I did was this:
Met my spend on Delta gold, then before the AF was due, I transferred it to HHonors (never had before, so I met spend for points, while keeping the account number/age intact), then applied for the basic delta, and got the 5k for 1st purchase. I'll hang onto this one and eventually see if I can move it to gold again, after the 2yr window, to see if I can get the 35k point again.
...and I just relized the basic isn't even mentioned on Amex's site anymore...so here's the link for those wondering about the card I'm talking about...

maybe you should explain to me the love for hilton and marriot cards. Their points are worth very little , other than free night, i don't get it .

Hilton: 40k points short of a free night in Gold Coast, AU. Around $250 value.
I think they're considered the same product. Yesterday I did a little test to see if I would be able to qualify for the platinum chargecard sign-up bonus. I had a gold card but closed it out in June. When I try to see if I can get the sign-up bonus for the platinum, it said I would not be eligible in a little blurb at the top of the screen.
granted that was for the charge cards and not for the revolvers, I think it might be the same. I'd suggest you go to one of the offers and click on it and see if you see that blurb at the top of the screen as well.

I guess its ok value , but compared to airline cards i just don't see it , i would rather use an arrival+ for hotel or something to that effect. I feel marriot is pretty limited since its only category 1-4 free night . I will have to reassess after i go for citi aa and possibly UA cards.

It's one night out of seven, so if I have to use cold hard cash credit so be it. I do talk about Hilton points frequently (Marriott to a much lesser extent), but I have other factors to consider in applying for another Amex:
1) I already have an Arrival+ and Barclays just approved a US Airways card 2 months ago, I doubt they are going to approve another.
2) I already have a United card and have reached Chase's internal limit.
3) I am within the 60 (65) day rule for Citi apps.
4) None of #1-3 offer backdating, which is value in and of itself.
