Hi Folks,
I wanted to get your take on this. I received a targeted offer yesterday for an upgrade on my existing Delta Gold to the Delta Platinum. Upgrade today and receive 5K bonus miles upon upgrade, and no change to your annual fee, then $195. Is this even a good card? Doing a little research I see very little difference between the Delta Gold and Platinum, other than the flight certificate thats offered with the plat. DW and I travel about once a year domestically on Delta.
Thanks!

If you travel only once a year in US, the only difference is the companion certificate. If this is going to be like from Miami to Alaska each year, then it is worth it. But if this is from Miami to Atlanta, it is probably not worth the fee difference.
Also, upgrade blocks you from getting the Delta Plat bonus.
For me, the companion certificate is worth the difference. Was the offer just the miles, or are they offering MQMs as well? Will likely upgrade DW's Gold to Platinum at some point so that we have two certificates. There is also the miles boost, where if you spend $25,000 in a calendar year on Platinum you get an extra 10k miles and 10k MQMs, then another 10k/10k bonus at $50,000. Personally, I would rather put spend on another card. For example, I could get 5 SkyMiles per $ spent at Delta on my Amex Platinum vs 2 on the Delta card. So miles boost, companion ticket, and annual fee are the only three differences between the cards.

It was just the miles, and AF remaining the $95 until account renewal (which is April I think). It was interesting because I got this offer right when I was thinking about downgrading to the Delta Blue because Dining is my biggest spend category by far. For the companion certificate, do you ever have any problems redeeming it? I guess my biggest fear is upgrading, and then coming to the realization that the certificate wouldn't work on the flights that I need.

The card is good, your offer is not. You only get the bonus once with Amex so try and make it count. Call them and tell them you know you can get 70,000 bonus miles and 10,000 MQMs if you open a new account instead of upgrading. Ask them to match that or give something worthwhile if you are giving up that bonus.
As far as her companion cert goes, it can be well worth it but you will not earn it until your next renewal, which is an additional $195. Do you fly first class? If so, it would not apply and be useless then as it’s for coach.
I don't usually fly first class because the difference in service usually isn't enough to warrant the extra $ on the short haul Delta flights that DW and I take. So the certificate I guess would be nice in that regard since we fly coach anyway. We do enjoy that Comfort + though. We've done that several times. I might get on chat with Amex and see what they can offer me.

My first statement will close on Friday. Hopefully someone else can answer this. Doing some research prior to applying for the card, the reports looked good.
Logged on Amex chat, only other offer they could give me was to add AU to my Delta Gold and meet spend bonus of $500 for 10K miles. Think I'll just wait this one out this time. Looks like a good card, just want a better offer.
There goes Amex with wanting those AUs, lol

K - Here is more on the companion certificate -->Source
OP - If AMEX doesn't give you 70k to upgrade, i would not do it. I would just apply ONLY IF you do travel a least once a year and far enough to justify the AF. My wife and i have this card, so we will get two free flights every year and thouse flights would cost a least $400, so paying $195/year is worth it.
