As someone with both, I'm at a loss (beyond signup bonuses) why anyone would take Delta over Gold? I'm personally sitting at over 85k delta miles (mostly signup bonuses + 1 unused companion cert) and 360k MR points at present. The flexability of MR points seems like a no brainer to me vs Delta - I rarely use my Delta card. (I met requirements for Delta gold signup, then Plat upgrade bonus and then stopped using it) Can anyone smarter than me chime in? I'd love to hear use cases where the Delta card is better than Gold. (I am near a Delta hub)
Please try to look at it as though you only had one or the other and why you'd choose one over the other. Can you get more value transferring MR points for miles? Consider the free companion cert, yearly fees, and MR transfer partners.
From my POV, the gold always wins out for it's sheer flexabiility, if for no other reason.
...I should really start using my points. :/
Free checked bag savings for a family of non-elites can add up.
DP gives a Global Entry credit.
Part of the value proposition of Gold relies on credits that require a lot of micromanagement.
Certainly for both the flexibility and earning of points, Amex Gold would win out no question for most people. They are entirely different cards, though, and can complement each other well.
The companion certificate alone should more than pay for itself as long as you use it. That free bag is for you and up to 8 companions flying on the same reservation as well as slightly earlier boarding if you are not flying in a premium cabin or do not have status. The card also gives both a boost of MQMs and a waiver of the MQD requirements for up to Platinum Medallion when you spend $25,000 or more in a year, which is a major reason for its popularity. Another advantage of the card is that it gives you the ability to access SkyClub (for a fee), which the Gold charge card does not.
Companion ticket. Also, the Delta offers the Global Entry credit and Gold does not.
Otherwise known as what K said.

While you are near a Delta hub, I didn't hear that you are a frequent ( 3 or more round trips per year ) Delta customer. It is also not clear whether you've used the Companion Pass you were awarded. If one does not fly Delta very often, and certainly if there's no excitement to use the Companion Pass, then the Delta Platinum doesn't make any sense.
