So, I applied to Amex Blue Cash for the $150 bonus. I missplaced the card, and when I found it again it was to late to spend the $1,000 to qualify for the bonus. I asked for an extension and they said we will put in a request, but no guarentee, and it will take up to 6-8 weeks. The fee was about due, so I cancelled it not wanting to pay the fee if I wasn't going to get the bonus. I then applied for it again, I knew about the rule if you had it in the past you wouldn't get the bonus, so I specifially mentioned to them, I needed to get the bonus. It came back approved. I specifically asked about the bonus. I was told yes, it says you will get the bonus, there is a notationa of a policy waiver. I called back agian and was told the same thing(I am not sure if the policy waiver phrase was used more than once).
Anyway, call in looking for the bonus - NO. I was told no notation on the account, and never heard of a policy wavier. I don't believe they would lie like that, especially when the issue was the old account was never used. If they wanted to use the bonus to get customers, then why no waiver. Why lie about it too? Doesn't make sense to me. So, I have to wait to cancel as I needed to get some of the cash rewards go through, but after that I am done. I live in MA and I just found out I will be able to get a prorated refund on the annual fee. I just really thought they were a better company than they are acting. Also seems they are turning away a good customer. I don't churn accounts for bonsus, only have a few cards, and I used thier card often.
So, lessoned learned. Don't believe customer service one bit.
ALWAYS get a name or employee ID number when talking or chatting, keep detailed notes of time, date, etc.
Helps to reference so they can research if needed.
Or better yet, get it in writing, ask the rep to email or message your through Amex confirming what they told you.

These can help, but all the issuers have a policy that the contract/offer is what counts and cannot be overridden by whatever a rep said. (For obvious reasons).

Not to be unkind, but Amex didn't lie, you failed to meet the requirements to qualify for the bonus.
Sorry to hear OP, but with AMEX anymore, figure only one shot at a bonus on any of their cards. Regardless what anyone tells you verbally.

Why need read the post more carefully. That wasn't the "lie" OP was referring to.

Exactly. There was no lie. Ever.
I read the entire post and understood it. We all face lots of extenuating circumstances and I certainly understand that. So does American Express, I'm sure.
None of which changes the fact that OP didn't meet the requirements to qualify for the bonus.
The lie is that the CS who told me yes, you have it under a policy waiver. That is a lie. It was after I had specifically said I canceled the first card due to the bonus, and the bonus was why I was applying, so it seems reasonable to grant it to me, sure they could so no, but then tell me no.
Anyway, the posts here about them being able to research, got me to call. I am not sure if somone is going to try to review the tapes, but it was elevated to the marketing department for review, instead of the 6-8 weeks, it will take about 5 biz days.
tcbofade, you may be mistaken, your quote of me was the first card, which I am not talking about, I was not asking for the bonus on that. The second card I met the spending limits on. I did this after I was told I was going to get the bonus.
