Nobody sees the "member since" anyway, It is however nice being greeted with "thank you for being a long time member of Amex" when you call in.

Applies to personal, corporate and authorized user accounts. If you were are cardholder on that corporate account, that works.
Previously I failed to mention that the amex CSR said something to the effect of 'the card I got in 1991 is segregated into the biz card group' and that it wouldn't be in the personal card database. I like member since 2020 just fine, either 4 digit date has symmetry.
Unfortunately 1991 is a palindrome which actually makes it a far superior year. 2020 is a poor substitution. 
I'm not sure how you can let that stand and be okay with yourself.

..err, or was it how much of my vocabulary study was fused with CO and JM.

Nothing underhand on the part of the consumer, I always found it odd on behalf of Amex!
