I don't think that the case, it has been a frequent topic of discussion especially in the year or two when it stopped "working".  Nothing underhand on the part of the consumer, I always found it odd on behalf of Amex!  ("Yes, I know the account was opened yesterday, but it makes sense to report as April 1978, because the current month is April and they opened their first Amex in 1978.  I don't see why you are confused!")

What exactly is the appeal?

We want to impress pretty young cashiers by having cards that reveal that we may be older than we look?

??   I always go up to not-so-attractive cashiers, especially at stores where I am not buying anything, whip out my Amex, point to the member since date (87 in my case) and say "See?  See?" and then laugh mysteriously.   (OK, mysteriously for me, probably more a nervous high-pitched giggle to others)  They get confused/angry/threaten to call security   but all in a day's work.  I assumed most people do this.

Do we hope that dates or business associates will aggressively squint to read fine print on a small, fast-moving object before it's hidden again in a little leather check presenter?

Do we hope to misremember 5 years as a customer and 20 on the blacklist as 25 wonderful years?

Nobody sees the "member since" anyway, It is however nice being greeted with "thank you for being a long time member of Amex" when you call in.

True cynics might also ask "why?" there, pointing out that this is an more-or-less anonymous CSR issuing a canned greeting to a customer he/she has no genuine emotional connection to, but if it works for you.......

It can also depend on biz and personal card from what they told me.

I got a corporate card in 1991 for a DBA (sole proprietorship) but never had a personal amex card until 2020.

One of these day's maybe I'll get around to getting something from their business selection to see what turns up.

Applies to personal, corporate and authorized user accounts. If you were are cardholder on that corporate account, that works.

Previously I failed to mention that the amex CSR said something to the effect of 'the card I got in 1991 is segregated into the biz card group' and that it wouldn't be in the personal card database. I like member since 2020 just fine, either 4 digit date has symmetry.

Re: Amex “Member Since”

@DONZI

Unfortunately 1991 is a palindrome which actually makes it a far superior year. 2020 is a poor substitution. Smiley Sad

I'm not sure how you can let that stand and be okay with yourself.

You know what I'm about to have a tantrum over? Why doesn't my username have a member since date under it for the forums?
