For those that have been added as AU on Amex, is there any HP or SP done prior to being added? My concern is I know I dont qualify for an AMEX product currently, by myself, however being added on could potentially help my FICO and credit as a whole.

Don't know, it might actually considering that AC's are liable for the debt. (AC being Amex's term for AU's plus liability); however, I haven't read anything about that in the last six months, and you know on this forum somebody would've complained about that .
That said, do it anyway. Get that 2012 date set for future backdating. Even if there is one, it is pretty much nothing in six months anyway; take the AC offer, and just go apply for a Zync or whatever in January and take the free year of backdating. Don't sweat one inquiry for something that's going to help you later.
It shouldn't be a hard pull. Don't know if there would be a soft pull done though. I haven't heard of many people reporting being denied when they tried to be added as an additional cardmember...
quick ques - AC? what does that mean?
so is it possible to be denied to be added as AU?

If being added as an AU your credit really has no impact on it. No HP that I have ever heard of on a AU but SP is likely. The only reason I know of them checking your reports at all is to make sure you have not burned Amex in the past.
Treat an AU Amex as if was your own and and it will benefit you later down the road.

I would guess that if you are blacklisted then you would probably be denied an additional cardmember account.

AC = Additional Cardmember (Cardholder?). Not quite certain but that's Amex's term for what everyone else calls AU's... and apparently as an AC you're actually liable for the debt, more like a joint account than a AU in that regard.
Anyway if you have someone offering that to you, I'd take it. I wish that I did, it would completely change my plans credit wise with regards to Amex, and probably I would not have to waste an application and inquiry just trying to get 2012 set for backdating purposes in December with my Hail Mary Zync application. That is going to be a marginal approval at best, hoping for any sort of counter offer in my case. Autopay, $200 hard limit, don't care, just want the date!
Thanks for the feedback. From what I understood, being just as liable for the debt makes you a joint owner, which is much different then being an authorized user. For instance, my GF is auth user on her parents chase card, it reports on her credit, and she has a card, but she isnt legally responsible. Does AMEX not do that?
