Amex Re-Allocation Fail

edit- thanks for the tip from @ficosuave , you have to leave at least $1000 on the Everyday card.

Tried to reallocate from an older card to a newer one and Amex promptly shot me down. Figured I'd share for the crowd's entertainment:

Card 1- Amex Everyday, opened early April 2018. Mainly used for a balance transfer that was paid off before promo ended. Very little use last 9 months. 0% UTL. ~$5000 limit.

Card 2- Amex Cash Magnet, opened December 2018. Used by an AU, safe way for me to provide a safety net for a family member with a set monthly limit. $100- 200/mo, PIF. 2% UTL. $5000 limit.

Card 3- Amex Honors Hilton, opened December 2019. $7000 limit. Daily use. PIF.  $200 current balance. 3% UTL.

Card 3 opened with $2000 limit and I moved $5000 over from the Card 1 in January to give it the current $7000 limit. I figured it's time to cull the herd, so the Everyday card didn't make the cut. I wanted to move most of it's limit to the Hilton. I knew you can only do a reallocation once a month and figured it wouldn't be a problem since it's been 3 months. Instant rejection with a courteous, "we'll send you a letter..."

777 EX F8. 5% (and rapidly decreasing) aggregate UTL. 12/24, 4/12, 3/6 new accounts.

Also worth mentioning- they declined a CLI in January. I figured that was due to the newest Amex being a month old at that point. Coming up on three months from that rejection so we'll see how they like me in May.

Re: Amex Re-Allocation Fail

I moved 11K from my sock drawered Blue to the new Everyday card two weeks ago. Amex gave me Everyday card with only a 1K line.

Re: Amex Re-Allocation Fail

Similar situation, a couple months ago I tried reallocating all but $500 away from my Everyday Card, with plans of closing it soon.

Got denied. So I tried again leaving $1,000 on the Everyday and it went through without a hitch.

I thought the minimum for that card was $500, but perhaps not. Or maybe it varies for some known-only-to-Amex reason.

^^^ thanks for this. The system showed that it had to leave $500 on the card so that's what I left. I tried it again leaving $1000 and it went through. Kudos to you!

Re: Amex Re-Allocation Fail

I have always found that you have to leave $1K on a Amex card.

Re: Amex Re-Allocation Fail

I tried moving $500 off of my $1000 base Hilton card over to my Surpass. When I went in to do it, it said I could request to move up to $500. Tried it and...nothing. No approval, no denial. Using the status check link, the request is on there but the status field is empty. I assume it didn't happen because I'm pretty sure approval is instant.

Are there stipulations beyond the minimum amount that has to be left on a card? Seems it shouldn't matter where one wants to move CL since all of it has already been granted to the cardmember...
