So i am just wondering if anyone knows the answer to this. I understand the Amex Security Code is the 4 digits on the front. However i noticed on the back are 3 digits also. What is the difference? Or whats the 3 digit one for?
Got to say I've wondered this myself. Whenever I've been asked for it (by AmEx for account service or a merchant) I've always been told to use the four digit code on the front... so what's the point of the three digit code on the back?
We must be told!

I think it's just a different type of security. In-fact I think some of the older cards don't even have the 3 digit on there. My best guess.
The three-digit security code on the back of American Express cards is an additional security measure for internal American Express transactions and maintenance only. This number should only be shared with American Express upon request during a call or live chat and not to any merchants or other third parties.

Based on personal experience, the 3 digit number is used for AMEX's internal security measures for your account. It should only be given to AMEX over the methods in which Pooka stated.

I was asked this code recently as AMEX suspected some charges of mine, on my new BCE, as fraudulent charges. They asked it for verification purpose.
