Amex Sub Restriction list. Anyone found a way to get off with no open amex accounts.

My fiancee opened a Delta Amex card ( August 2017) for me when my credit wasn't great and I needed a card to use for work. I didnt know much about credit at the time and quickly found out that all the main reasons we got the card didn't apply to AU's. Amex acceptance in the caribbean is crap too.

She closed it a year later after the AF posted. Roughly 8,000 in spend during the first year. She didn't get a great bonus only 35K points.

Closed the account August 2018

She has no open accounts with amex as the primary account holder. She is an AU on my Gold charge card and does use it quite often. That card saw ~10K during the past year.

We are interested in the SPG Luxury card. Tried to sign her up  through a referral link but received the Pop-up message so she cancelled the application. Tried again this evening without using my referral link and same popup appeared.

I know there's been some DP's that if you put some spend through amex that they will relax on the bonus popup. She obviously can't do this since she doesnt have any open amex accounts of her own to put spend through.

Has anyone managed to get off the list somehow ? heavy AU spend ?

DPs are still new but unfortunately it doesn't look good.

Even after "relaxing" on the bonus popup after some spend, there's DP showing that AMEX still refused to deliver the SUB. Maybe AMEX wants to see some spend for an extended period of time but only time will tell.

I got the pop-up when I applied for the Cash Magnet back in the summer, and I had only closed two cards (one of which had no bonus at all), so I feel her pain.

Since as you say she has no existing Amex to run some charges through she'll likely just have to 'bite the bullet' and get the card sans bonus.

I'm in the same boat... the next Amex card I get - if I ever decide to get another - will have to be because I simply want the card and not for the SUB, and if I do get the SUB I'll just consider that 'gravy'.  Smiley Indifferent

Unfortunately they will probably just have to obtain the card without a SUB if they really want it. No one really knows how the long the SUB list lasts, or how to get removed from it. People have reported not getting the popup and still being denied the bonus. So really, there's no way to say other than managing other Amex accounts well and avoiding opening/closing. In this case, though, there are no other Amex accounts.

No one will ever really know what the algorithim is so to avoid frustration I would just app without the SUB.

That’s what I figured.

The sub isn’t the whole reason to get the card. We would have good choice for that 50K free night and the new luxury property credit they are adding

It could compound the whole SUB issue though. Not much spend on the card after opening which leads to the downside to this whole thing is that the card won’t see much use besides Marriott spend which won’t be terribly high per year.

I prefer Hilton’s but there’s times where Marriott just has a better selection and we would want to stay open to the brand.

How about the Marriott card? A SUB, though slightly less, the annual night is only 35,000 but the base earning is the same.

Isnt it under 5/24 ?

I would need to check her 5/24 status but I suspect shes still over it for atleast another 6-8 months

Yep, all Chase CCs are now subject to the 5/24 restriction (more so with co-branded/partner versions), so if she's outside that territory she can definitely give that one some consideration.
