Re: Amex activation CLI?

My situation - app'ed online in response to a snail mail pre-qual from Amex for the BCE. Was approved instantly for 10k SL. When I received the card in the mail I activated it and then immediately requested a 3x CLI online. Got the message that a response was coming in the mail for my CLI. I then got an email about an hour later that they had processed my request and that I needed to call an 800 number for further info. I called and was told that I need to wait 60 days before I can request a CLI so they can get some history with me. I stated that it was my understanding that the "wait 60 days" thing was no longer the case. The CSR specifically said that Amex has reinstituted this policy. About a week later I received the snail mail below that confirmed that I need to wait 60 days.

My guess is that if you have stellar credit or already have some history with them then you probably can get a CLI at activation. I also believe that the 90/180 day rule still applies, i.e. if you are denied a CLI and you are "outside" of a wait period then you have to wait 90 days before you can request a CLI. Requesting a CLI while you are in a wait period does not "reset" the clock. If you request and get a CLI then you have to wait 180 days before you can request another CLI.

It is sure looking like the 61 day wait is back.

Agreed. But more specifically I think the following is true:

Upon activation of a new AMEX card you CAN request a 3x CLI.

This will result in one of the following:

1. You will be instantly approved or offered a lower CLI as an alternative.

2. Your CLI request will be "unable to be approved" because AMEX wants some history with you. This history can be 60 days. Has anyone seen 30 days? 90 days?

In the case of #2 if you ask for a CLI before the history is established, e.g. you ask for a CLI on day 59, you will be denied but that will NOT reset the timer. In this scenario you would have to wait one more day. I believe you can always call AMEX and ask when your "ready for CLI" date is.

In the case of #1 if you are approved you will need to wait 180 days before you can request a new CLI.

In all cases if you have waited the requisite time and are eligible to request a CLI and you do request a CLI and you are denied then you have to wait 90 days from that event before you can request another CLI.

Thank you.

Can you try at 61 days and report back? I guess the 60 (61) days rule is back.

Will do - it is on my calendar.

I think it is noteworthy that my  "denial" letter from AMEX made no mention whatsoever of my EX report. I still have to believe that because some folks are getting a CLI at activation there must be something in a person's file that triggers this "we need some history" response.

My EX myFICO FICO 8 score is 697. I had no inquiries at the time I app'ed to AMEX. I had one 30-day late with Honda dated 9/2009 and a late payment with the Dept of EDU (student loan) back in 2010. I recently paid off a mortgage and have no other baddies. My AAoA is really good (don't remember the actual #).

While that's a definite possibility, we don't know that for sure until we get further proof.  People until very recently have been receiving CLIs at activation so it's too early to know for sure if they have changed back to their old policies,
