apparently the verification charge is a even 100$. Does this sound right. I'm confused and scarf.
It must depend on where you live. Every card I've ever used and every gas station I've encountered only does a $1 verification charge lol. Never seen anything more than that.
I guess in the end unless you are using a pre-paid AMEX card or you got FR'd and got a rediculously low hard limit set on your card, most people really don't have to worry about a temp hold on an AMEX card, I know my Zync card has an internal limit of $20k minimum last I checked, my smallest AMEX card limit is 6k. So i'm good even if I drove an 18 whelled semi.
My AMEX has always been $100 and any other card $1. I was concerned the first time I filled up on AMEX.

Same here.. I thought it was some sort of fraud my 1st time too..
Yep 100 hold here as well.. Granted my limit can support 100 easily,I just don't think it is right they do it.. Use my SM now and $1 hold tops, problem solved.. Same stations too.. Don't understand it at all
A Chevron station on I-5 in California did a 175$ hold on my Mastercard.

Now I exclusively use Sallie Mae to fill up. There's never any hold and the only charge showing is exactly what I incurred at the pump, as temporary transaction.
Does AMEX act differently than other cards or is something there that I'm missing?
Are you saying there is a $100 hold with AMEX, but if you use a different card at the same exact gas station, there isn't a hold?
If that's the case, it could be how their proccesor handles different CC networks. It may post authorize MC network cards, but only pre authorize AMEX cards.
Possible.
I started getting uncomfortable with AMEX putting such a large hold on my card. On a road trip, I got charges denied because I only had a $1,000 CL on my AMEX and a few such holds made it cross the limit.
Since then, I use SMMC. Regardless of retailer, it charges only the exact amount.
AMEX is "interesting".

Yeah a 1k AMEX wouldn't really be usable on a trip. Good thing I don't use my AMEX for gas lol.

Me neither. Sallie Mae FTW.
Maybe Freedom for the UR points when it's offered 5% (I guess next quarter). And Discover occasionally when they're 5% as well, so that they continue showing some love.
BCE is there for the big CL and the grocery spillover from SMMC.

Same pattern for me too. I'm in NYC if that matters.
