Amex first CLI question

Hello!

I've been approved for an American Express card and I have a few questions, would be grateful if someone could clear them up.

I'm from Brazil, I applied for an American Express (Cash Magnet) credit card recently and it was approved, I don't have an SSN, I used NovaCredit, that was in February.

The card came with a $1k limit, which is good, but low for my usage.

Today, 90 days have passed and the CLI option has been released on the website.

During those 3 months, I kept my monthly bill at $500-$600, always paying on time, in full.

- Should I wait longer to order a CLI?
- Is it possible to order a CLI of $1k -> $5k directly, or is the limit really 3x? I believe that if I could get straight to 5k, it would be easier to increase in the future with 3X.

Oh, I also heard that in the US, it's good to keep a low % credit usage, as it's my first US card, every month I got 60-70% usage, thought it was a good thing to show to the American Express that I actually use those limits, despite not depending on credit.

Again, thanks for any personal help.

Regards,

Re: Amex first CLI question

If you are using the CLI button on the website you are only going to get the 3X if they think your credit profile supports it. If you get the 3k then in 181 days go for 3X again and you will be well past your 5K SL
Not sure how high AMEX will let you go if you don't have a SSN. Hopefully someone who is more familiar with that can help.

Where in the app is the CLI button?  I see the CLI request button under my account info on the website but don't see it in the app.  Not looking to try yet, just curious.   I've got just under 4.5yrs till by BK is gone so I'll probably be stuck with my SL for a good while.

Bem-vindo à comunidade myFICO.

You may want to consider someone else's advice, but I would say that the general consensus according to the DPs around AmEx is that the maximum CLI is typically 3x. That said, the only way you will get a definitive answer of what you can get is by pulling the trigger on the CLI and seeing what you get. If it is super-important to you to get to the $5,000, and you don't get it off of the initial CLI request, you can always call in and talk to a CSR (really, likely an underwriter) to ask for a reconsideration.

This will not guarantee you your desired limit, and they may ask you to do a hard pull in order to do so. My advice is that if it comes to a hard pull, it is not worth it, say "No, thank you." You'd be better off taking their counter offer and running spend through the cards, continuing to pay in full, until your next available opportunity to request a soft pull CLI comes up (6 months).

Patience is key. Over time, you can get where you want to be. ¡Boa sorte!

Sidenote: I think you should refrain from including your full name (or any other personally identifiable information) in your posts as it goes against myFICO® Forums Terms of Service. Just a friendly suggestion.

I see this is your first post. You may want to check out the New Member Checklist in this post. Again, welcome!

I have edited my original post, and removed the app reference. I no longer see an option to request a limit increase through the app.

Regards,

1. You should apply for a 3k limit at this point.

2. You should pay off some or all of your balance before the statement cuts, to keep your utilization low. You can make multiple payments during the month. Utilization, for FICO scoring purposes, is just based on the balances reported on the reporting date, which in the case of American Express is the statement date.

Re: Amex first CLI question

the link has been removed from the website but still works.  I went from a $2k limit to $30k in less than 18 months on my BCE card.  I used this link each time for the CLI request.
