Amex or chase??

So I'm probably going to buy something from eBay for the first time ever, is it better to use my Amex or chase incase I get duped like the stories I seen/read. Will Amex provide me better security?

eBay -> Paypal -> any CC

You get eBay Buyer Protection, Paypal Purchase Protection and your CC liability policy.  eBay's Buyer Protection has never let me down, nor has Paypal when the protection wasn't available via eBay.

Re: Amex or chase??

I have had several amex products now (first one back in 06) since 2012.  Love them all.  Love the company. I'll be a devout follower for a while to come.

I have a couple of Chase products (and they are my primary Bank, now), but only as an AU.

See, I REALLY like places like Chase and NFCU, because they have high standards.  They only allow certain people in to play.

Chase won't extend me ANY LOC until after this repo falls off.  I like that about them. (Same thing about USAA - they won't give me ANYTHING other than my checking, savings, and insurance) until my repo falls off.

Despite being an active duty veteran, NFCU won't touch me.  I like companies like these stated above.

So to answer your question: Amex or Chase. I say, go w/ both!

When it comes to cards security, AMEX is no doubt the best. but considering that Ebay has payer protection, it doesn't make a difference whcich card. I'd say pick the card that give you the most rewards back

AMEX BCE (30K), DISCOVER IT (29.5K), NFCU CASH REWARDS (25K), BOA TRAVEL REWARDS (15K), USAA VISA (13K), CHASE SAPPHIRE RESERVE (13K), COMMENCE MASTERCARD (7.5K), CHASE FREEDOM (7K), CHASE FREEDOM (7K), TFCU CC (2.5K), TARGET REDCARD (900)

+1

AND remember, you can app new amex products every January, for maximum backdate, like myself and many others do.

Amex is the only lender that presently does this for its' members.

Re: Amex or chase??

Doesn't really matter which one IMO.  As others have stated, both ebay and Paypal have excellent buyer protection.  I've never had to fall back on my credit card's protections for ebay purchases in over 14 years of using ebay.  I have had to use Paypal's and ebay's several times.

Re: Amex or chase??

As both a buyer and seller on eBay, i can tell you that the buyer is really covered through eBay, through Paypal, and finally through your card.  That said, go with a seller that has good feedback (100% if possible and over 100 positives) and that alone will protect you because they will bend over backwards to make sure they get a positive rating from you.  Anything less reduces their value on the site.

Chase & Amex provide good protections though.  I've only ever charged back one thing and it was through Chase, due to a website glitch that sold me movie tickets to the wrong theatre.  The process was painless for me and resolved in my favor in less than a week.

Re: Amex or chase??

Agree with everything stated above.  Look for a decent seller with great feedback (although sometimes the negative feedback is not their fault at all).  It's been a while but Paypal used to have some sort of clause in their terms about going through them first.  Making a chargeback with your credit card would be last resort but nothing wrong with wanting the extra protection.  I've also bought and sold on there for many years and never had an issue that eBay/Paypal didn't take care of.

Re: Amex or chase??

You are going to be okay with either chase or paypal.

I heard eBay's buyer protection has drastically improved over the past few years, but I have yet to try the service yet myself. Last time when I tried to file a claim, they said I did the purchase as a guest and had to file a claim with paypal instead. So in the end I skipped paypal and just called chase and they got the claim resolved for me pretty quickly.

I had very bad experiences with paypal claims. Issues ranged from ridiculously long wait times on the phone to reach an actual human being, long claims process, burden of proof being on my end instead, etc. This was about 4-7 years ago though. Maybe they got better now, or maybe not. If I run into any issues nowadays (quite rare for it to happen actually), I would just send an email to eBay before calling my bank. Can't really be bothered to test if paypal's service got better.
