I know return payments are taboo. I was switching banks and accidentally paid with the wrong account. I did pay again with the right account before the due date; however, I did not want a "Return payment" on my record.
Should I stop payment from the bank side or is that the same as Return payment?
I heard this internally makes it super hard to get credit limit increases. Will this action do that for me?
I was about to ask if you can cancel the payment but just checked my amex and there's no option for it. I think it would still be "returned" if you cancel it with your bank... Try calling them, they might understand the situation.
I called and they couldn't cancel it from their side. Told me to cancel it from the bank. They said they didn't know if it would internally affect me but all they care about is on time payments. I did make another payment from the correct bank account, and my due date isn't yet. I just hope when it clears on Monday and I get the "return payment" it wont affect my ability to get credit from them:/
In August 2017 I had a returned payment. It was not a late payment, but a returned payment. I can tell you this prevented me from appliying for additional cards that I was pre approved for on their site due to this returned payment. My applications in 12/17 were denied. In 2/18 I was approved for additional cards. Also regarding credit line increases I received a auto CLI in 11/17 and another in 1/18 so i do not think the return payment effected that to much.
From a lenders perspective a returned payment is a returned payment. The reason behind it doesn't really matter to them. As a lender I'm sure they've heard just about any excuse that we as consumers can think up...be it true or not.
While this probably won't trigger any immediate adverse action, keep in mind that such an issue can and probably will affect your account internally...especially when it comes to applying for increases or even additional cards.
If you haven't already...try to remove an outdated/closed account the moment you add the new one. No need to have a useless account lingering in your payment profile. It'll help prevent this from happening again. Best of luck to you OP and I hope you don't suffer too much heartburn from the lender over this.
It would be very useful to have the option to cancel the payment while processing. I've done that with Discover once, without any negative repercussions, as far as I can tell...
