Amex pre-approval in mail

What do the mail pre-approvals mean?  I want an Amex card and was aiming to app for it in December when my only baddie falls off, a late payment from 2007.  I want a decent credit limit not a toy limit.  I opened 2 credit cards this year the discover and the capital one a few months ago.  I don't know if the pre-approval means I should go ahead and apply or still wait until December as my original plan.  Any thoughts?

I received two Barclay Mail pre-approvals yesterday and today I have the Amex.  I must have just been put on some mailing list for credit cards.

Re: Amex pre-approval in mail

It's not guaranteed, I have used pre approval tools through amex and other sites and none have matched me to any amex and they have never sent me offers through the mail but I applied and got approved for the prg and blue cash everyday

Amex Blue Cash Everyday: $25,000 | Navy FCU Cash Rewards: $25,000 | Discover It: $20,500
Chase Freedom: $12,500 | Citi Double Cash: $10,000 | Bank of America Cash Rewards: $8,000

Amex pre-approvals are fairly accurate, they tend to find people they want.  What card was it for?  I got a charge card with them when my Fico was 656 and had 1 negative on my CR still.  I'm not sure if Barclays is as accurate as an Amex pre-approval.

I've never apped based on their pre-approvals. Even though I don't need a higher CL, I've been trying to get a CLI from them the last 6 months but they keep declining me. However they've sent me offeres for their personal Platinum card and business Platinum card. I never apped for them because I simply cant afford the AF but have always wondered if I'd be approved. Anyways, why would they want me to get another card even when theyve been declinding my CLI? hmmm

AMEX: $25,000, CSR: $10,000, Chase Priority Club: $1,500, Freedom: $5000, Freedom Unlimited: $1000, Discover: $21,000, BoA $11,000, WF Cash Wise: $5000

Re: Amex pre-approval in mail

The pre-approval was for the everyday card.  I think I'll still wait until December to apply.  I'd hate to get a low CL and not be able to increase it like pp is having problems with.

I don't want a Barclay's card, just thought it was weird that all of a sudden I'm getting pre-approvals in the mail.
