Amex product change questions

I am currently waiting for a Delta amex to arrive in the mail. I was planning to do a product change to Blue, a BT and a CLI at activation. I have a feeling that I won't be able to do BT at 4.99 for 15 months if i wait for couple months. My questions are: 1) should I do the product change at activation? 2) will I have all that is promised by the Blue if I wait?

Re: Amex product change questions

Amex no longer does CLI at activation.  When I activated mine I was told I could request a CLI after 30 days.

In the meantime, though, there have been a number of posts indicating that the CLI waiting period has changed to 6 months.  I'm not sure if the waiting period is still 30 days after activation for new accounts, or if that has also been changed to 6 months.

I am also positive that when you do product change you will not get ANY of the promo rates that you would get if you opened the account that way. you will go str8 to normal apr

Re: Amex product change questions

1.) You may request a product change from Delta to Blue anytime after receipt of the card.  (I changed mine even before activation.)

2.) If you do make the change to blue, keep in mind that you may not be able to receive the same benefits that you would have received had you applied for the Blue directly.  For instance, I was able to make the change to Blue and receive the 11.74 APR but was unable to receive the introductory rate or the special BT rate offered at the time.  A friend of mine was able to switch, but she was stuck with the Delta APR of 17.74%!  Just make sure you get your Blue terms at the time you make the change so that you won't be suprised later on.  Good luck!

Re: Amex product change questions

I received my Delta card today I was able to convert it to blue cash, but the rep refused to change the APR. She said that I will have all the other promos that come with the card. I wonder if I should try again when I receive the Blue. What do you guys think?

It never hurts to ask.

Re: Amex product change questions

Did you try for the blue initially and get declined? If not, just apply for the blue, or blue cash (IMO blue cash is better).

That's pretty lame of amex to approve a product change but not APR.. it's not really changing your product at that point, since you're still getting the terms and conditions of the old card.. they just renamed your card to make you think you got a good deal. It should be all or none

It's not just renamed.  You still get the rewards program and AF, or lack thereof, of the new card.  I believe that's why most people (except me) convert from Delta to one of the Blue products.  Most people seem to prefer cashback or flexible rewards with no AF over a Delta Skymiles rewards program with an AF.  They don't just give you a Delta card with a different name.
