I got the points back. I had to verify my spend. Closed the rest of my Amex cards except my ED and Hilton

Sorry to hear that. I've come across a few blogs where people are reporting their MR points being pulled back. Some reporting they didn't engage in MS either. Have you tried to call AmEx and ask why? It is on their terms after all.
