If you fill it out and everything is verified as you originally stated, then you should be fine. Think of it this way:

They can see your CR, and know that anything stated on there (cards, inqs, etc) is accurate. If you had a 580 and 16 derogs, they wouldn't need to go through this mess as they would decline you outright. If they are asking for address and income verfication, it is to make sure that you are telling the truth as that information can't be verified as accurate on your CR.

Fill it out and your odds are great, assuming it matches what you told them in the first place.

So you might be right as the OP did indeed get the card, but not sure I agree with the reasoning here.   The logic could be as you say, but it's also possible that because the OP declined an FR in the past, they will do income verification at the next available opportunity (next app) regardless of whether the app would usually be declined.  Big company methods and procedures don't always follow logic!

But, OP was successful, so we won't know!

I've always thought the number one reason was due to big spending.

Also, seems like trying to spend too much on gift cards seems to spook them.

They like big spending, but if it doesn't fit your income, or habits matching MS, they're gonna get nosy fast.

It depends.  And in most cases, they don't know they are gift cards, just strongly suspect.   At least on certain cards, MS doesn't seem to be a big issue, others say it is on the SPG for example.
