Just some history.
Sam Walton worked at a JCPENNY store in the 40s for a year before he went on to establish his own store..WALMART.
Yes I use my JCP card at CVS for minor purchases. You can only use the SEPHORA though inside a JCP store, you cant use it at a free standing SEPHORA location, which is odd
If you aren't really going to use a JCP card then I wouldn't get it. You will most likely have "appr's remorse" later as you are presented with much more useful card options in the future. A lot of people make the mistake of getting like 50 store cards they are never gonna use . It is a powerful emotional rush getting approved for a card.
As your scores inmprove you can afford to be a little more selecting. Just because a card has no annual fee doesn't mean that there are not risks involved. Every additional card you get requires managing, paying attention to bills, the possibility of a billing error or identity theft and the temptation which credit presents so I would agree with others. If you want the Walmart card maybe go ahead and apply for it.

I like to have cards to stores I don't like so I don't use them! Haha :-)
LOL...me too. I know I'll have at least 5 or 6 cards that always report zero....:-)
I think it is good for you to establish whatever tradeline is offered to you now because it will help you in the long run. Even if it is a low limit it will help your aaoa and just having an unsecured tradeline is a huge step forward towards good credit. I hear you about having cards to stores you don't need. With self discipline you can have good cards and have zero balances on those as well..

That is odd that you can't use JCP in a Sephora store. I've only been in one once. Always ordered from Sephora online, used JCP card. It's the only place I ever used the card, didn't know about CVS. Alas, I know longer have my card, went bye-bye with BK. I wonder if Sephora is missing me.
Yes, I made quite the fool of myself at Sephora once when I tried to use my JCP card to purchase some things for my DD. Works like a charm in the Sephora mini-store set up inside JCP though--and I've found much better deals at the mini-store than in the stand-alone Sephora. Good to know about the online option with Sephora, I had no clue. Thanks for the tip!
I used to go to JC Penney with my mom as a kid. They used to have one in the urban area where I live but now most of them are in shopping malls. Not too far though...It'll be good to make a purchase once in a while to keep active.
