Where did you get this info at? A friend of mine had a credit card that was through FIA (BOA) & then later they sent him a new card with a new account number andhe showed it to me and it says member since 1982 or something like that. So BOA does backdate.
BofA might put a "member since date" on their card but they do not backdate on credit reports. My Debit card has a Member Since date as well but it is also meaningless from a credit reporting perspective. Only cards underwritten by AMEX will backdate on your credit reports.
Although it's just a retail store card, I've heard that Nordstrom will reactivate an old account and keep the original open date. Probably will only be useful for a very small percentage of the population.
I hope that Amex doesn't stop backdating in the future --it's a useful perk.
