I'm no engineer, that's for sure, but I have an affinity card via my professional association (AHIMA) from BofA. As a rule, the affinity cards are a bit easier to get than the straight BofA products.
I got my platinum WorldPoints MC in Feb 2008 with a FICO EX in the 720's, a 30-day that had just gone over one year old, a generous handful of other older lates, including a 90, and very low util. I did a 0% BT on it, so they gave me $10K, which they then raised several times. This was before the melt-down, of course.
The affinity cards are OK, but unless they're doing something for you on the SME side, they're kind of ehh as cards. And they can be really hard to switch to straight BofA cards in the future, should you want to do so.
