Approval odds....looking at Amex Gold and Hilton Surpass cards...

As it says gang, I am looking at my odds for these next 2 cards...as of 5/12/2021 my EX FICO 8 is 691.  I have eleminated all collections from my CR and only have 3 30 day lates and a 6 year old CO (which lead to aforemention removed collection) on my EX, EQ, and TU files.  I was wondering what my approval odds might be for one or both of these cards.  Amex has yet to update my Fico 8 on their app, so I know I need to at least wait until that happens, but just wanting a general consensus.  I've had my Amex Delta Gold for 4 months, always either PIF or let it be my one card in AZEO that reports ~ 10% util then of course its PIF'd. Overall revolving util is ~2.5-3%. Anyways thanks in advance for any and all input you all can provide me with...and have a good day and stay healthy!

edited to include total util.

Go to the application page and see if you're pre-approved.  You would have a much better chance if it says you're pre-approved as apposed to applying to expand...

@jcooks I will certainly try that once Amex updates their Fico score...my score went up 47 points since their last SP...

Also to note, is that once they update their FICO score for you to view, they will very likely continue to use the old score for their lending decisions for a bit longer. I've read varying speculations about how long to wait, but different folks have recommended anywhere from a week to a full month to be on the safe side. If it were me, I would wait until the score updates + at least a few more weeks. Also, like was already pictured in the previous post, look for the pre-approved verbiage too. That should be a pretty solid indication how they're feeling as well.

Second that above.  I waited until my EX F8 was 690, then until I saw a SP from Amex (current cardholder), then another couple days.

When I was approved, they quoted a score of 676 (last one before it jumped).  Hard to say what machinations were involved there, but do wait awhile after a score jump.

Yea I am certainly going to wait until they update the app, then I may even pull EX and look for their most recent SP date. Hopefully after all that I'll get the deathmedic you are pre approved message when I clicky the appy button lol.

Re: Approval odds....looking at Amex Gold and Hilton Surpass cards...

Well, Amex updated the Fico 8 on 5/11 shows an EX F8 of 673.  Still no deathmedic911, you're pre approved lingo when I click on apply for either card (for giggles I clicked on the basic Hilton and the Green card as well- same results with the applying to expand verbiage). So either I need to wait a bit longer and try again or perhaps come back in a month or 2 and see whats up after a bunch of inquries from car shopping last June become unscorable.

Maybe this is a sign to stop looking at my credit every day and just check on things every so many weeks.  Anyways, everyone have a great day and stay safe!

Re: Approval odds....looking at Amex Gold and Hilton Surpass cards...

I got approved for the AMEX Gold back in 2019 when my score was around 654 with 3/30 from 2016. As mentioned, I headed over to their application page just to see if I was in luck, and luck was on my side that day. The only other card I had at the time was my secured Discover Card.  I was surprised to say the least and while a pre-approval is no guarantee, I pulled the trigger anyway and was floored when I came back approved. Since then – its been my daily driver for 95% of my expenses. We use the points to book our flights with their airline partners every year.

Sounds like you're in about the same shape than I was then but with a higher score. Only difference is maybe Covid has them taking a closer look at applicants. At any rate, best of luck! Its such an awesome card.

Be careful of looking out for a SP from Amex.  Every time you check your Fico Score or go to Free Credit Score and Report on Amex app, I believe those trigger SP from them as well.  Ultimately, you won't know if that SP on EX will be from you or from them automating it.

The "free score" is a TransUnion VS3.  When looking at your FICO score through the now-buried link, it will only show the most recent Experian FICO 8 they have, and there will be no additional pull to refresh.
