I had a cashier tell me that the preapproval generally happens when someone make a large purchase with their debit card.

Any idea of what they consider a large purchase?

Re: Approved for Target!

She told me that mostly it is random but she said honestly it usually shows up if you make a large(?) purchase. Not sure what they consider large but since most people only get $200 CL, I would imagine somewhere close to that.

They know you have the money to pay it otherwise you would not have been at the store making the purchase with your debit(checking) card.....OOOO I get it now! Smiley Happy

That makes sense and I do need some things at Tarjay. I guess I'll see what kind of luck I have.

Re: Approved for Target!

Keep us posted! If it works for you I might have to give it a try since they denied me and won't do a recon. They denied me because I didn't have any recent TL's on TU but they just aren't reporting yet. I asked for a recon and volunteered to send proof of the TL's and they said no I would have re-apply. I don't want any more IQ's if it's not necessary.

Re: Approved for Target!

How exactly do they preapprove you with your debit card? I find that odd. How do they get enough info. to preapprove? Or are you guys saying they just assume that since you can make a large purchase on your debit card that you'd be a good candidate for the card?

Wow this topic has evolved lol!

I can believe the debit card connection. Your credit history can be obtained without a s s# and considering that I now know for a fact that Tarjay works with Lexis Nexis the idea of the debit card connection seems very possible.

Re: Approved for Target!

I think I only spent around $60 at target when I got my preapproval.
I got my Sam's card the same way.  Sam's wasn't nearly as generous and I only had to say yes to the card.  I didn't need to provide further information like I did with Target.  Scary....

Re: Approved for Target!

Wow! I didn't know that Sam's did preapprovals at the register too!

Re: Approved for Target!

I went to target yesterday and spent like 40 bucks- used my debit but did it as a credit and she said I was pre-approved for a target cc- I turned it down.. I don't really need another inquiry for 200cl

Re: Approved for Target!

Yeah, I guess you are right, I just didn't realize that when they swipe your debit card they can
retreive all that information just from your card.  Well, in my defense, dear boyfriend is a joint on the checking account I use to buy all household items, so if they are tapping into his credit profile, I won't be getting any preapproved anything!

Does anyone know if you already have the red card if they offer the upgrade to visa in this same manner? Might be worth a whirl using my personal checking account at target one of these days!
