The only issue with Sam's Club is that you have to have a membership. If one already does then it's a non issue but I don't think it'd be worth it to get even their cheapest membership just to save on gas...unless you're buying a lot of gas.
+1. And also you never want to go really out of your way to fill up. I'd have to drive an hour each way to New Hampshire to even get to one. I know someone who would once drive like 20 miles out of their way in a gas guzzler to save 10¢ a gallon. Those economics don't pan out. 😂

I thought you said you weren't going to mention it again! And it was only once. Well, two or three times. Five max!
I would not pay an annual fee of any amount for a bigger gas discount, and I don't think I'd even want to take the HP or new account for a bigger gas discount, unless it comes along with some other benefits I want. If you calculate the savings difference for your real-world actual use between a 5% gas card and a 2% gas card, it's not going to be that much per year, unless you are a trucker or a traveling salesman. That said, if you are already a Costco customer, I'd look at the Costco Visa. If already a Sam's customer, I'd look at the Sam's Club MasterCard. If already a Verizon customer, I'd look at the Verizon card.

@K-in-Boston @Anonymous You both make me giggle.
And I bet the person who drove 20 miles out of their way to save a few pennies would argue that it still made financial sense to do it. After all, filling up a 20 gallon tank from empty does allow for enough earnings to buy a Big Gulp from 7-11. LOL!

While I don't need instant gratification, most wouldn't describe me as being a very patient person either. So having to wait an entire year to collect my rewards is why I just can't get with the annual payouts of any card. But I do understand that some folks are able to make hay with such cards so they definitely have their place in the space.
You don't have to drive out of your way to go to Sam's it works anywhere for gas, but you do have to have a membership. Fort Knox credit union which was renamed has 5% as well without an annual fee I believe
@Wavester64 wrote:@designated_knitter Adding to what @coldfusion said - if you're a Verizon Wireless customer, you might want to consider getting a Verizon VISA (issued by Synchrony) for 4% (Verizon $) CB that can go towards your cell bill
Thanks! I but Synchrony/Verizon said "no" :-(.
I had a charge-off with Care Credit from 2016. Since then, I've gotten an Amazon Store card and Paypal credit but can't get a CLI to save my life. I actually attempted to call Synchrony today to pay in full (hoping that would get me out of the doghouse) and they literally would not take my money... then the very next day, I got a 1099-C.
I've filed a complaint with CFPB and did get an email from the EO of Synchrony and HOPEFULLY we can work something out but otherwise, Synchrony will have me on record as having burned them and suspect that will limit my prospects with them.
Very interesting discussion of using store cards to buy "general purpose" gift cards.
The other advantage of gift cards for travel purposes or online shopping is if you have a gift card, you don't have to worry about it getting "stolen" and used for nefarious purposes (skimming, etc).
Also interesting that store cards are "used against you" for the purposes of insurance scores... can anyone verify that and answer why that would be? That doesn't seem right that if I want a Target or Amazon store card, that should be held against me when buying insurance.

@K-in-Boston wrote:... Most fuel cards have a set "cents off per gallon" which may be great for someone in Missouri to save 5¢ per gallon on $1.25 regular unleaded but rather abysmal for someone saving 5¢ per gallon on $4.50 premium unleaded in California ... most will find that a general travel card that includes gas, a card with gas as a bonus category, or even a general purpose 2-3% cash back card will be better. And of course any of those can be combined with a fuel chain's loyalty programs for further savings.
Absolutely everything K said!
In my early days, I got a gas card as my first non-secured credit card ... Some smart guy in this forum calculated the potential rewards on my specific card some time ago and I was left dumb-struck. That he would even take the time to do it but also by how bad the rewards were for me, specifically as someone in a major metropolitan area paying ~$3.00 per gallon.
@designated_knitter, there's already some great discussion upthread! Definitely, the paragraph above from @K-in-Boston is an excellent synopsis. However, if getting another bank card that pays a better return on gas is not an option for you right now, don't let this discussion of the "best" card dissuade you from applying for a retail card. They can be a good option sometimes, and will allow you that convenience not having to carry cash or use your other limits.
@SecretAzure, I don't know how "smart" he was
but I remember that discussion. For anyone interested in some boring but more detailed calculations on the value of a retail "cents off per gallon" gas card (as opposed to a % off), see the link below. Also, message number 2 in that thread has a pretty detailed list of the best-paying gas card options available as of August 2020.

since many here mentioned buy gas giftcard at 5% discount. It makes me think about US bank Cash+ that can get you 5% at bestbuy as well.
a real 5% gas card still exist today. USAA Amex is one of them
