Personally I've never had an issue if they ask. Matter of fact for years I wrote "Ask For ID" on the Sig Strip. I've always been of the opinion security is a good thing.

That was always against the cardmember agreement

And yet countless people did it without consequence anyway.

Oh sure, but for those who thought they were being smart, there was always the chance that a by-the-rules merchant would reject the card.  Which I guess is even safer!

Re: Asking for ID

Safest thing for merchant is to barter and instead totally skip cash/checks/cards

If I mathed correctly, that $300.00 charge would be covered by 15 frozen turkeys, or 20 whole chickens.

If merchant wants to be "safe", they need to break piggy bank and invest in chip card reader or any form of wireless payment.

But, if gas stations are used as a reference, that's not going to happen till someone gets fed up.

Plus, in-store fraud has been on a decline for years, while  fraudulent *card non present* transactions have been increasing like crazy, currently at about 80% of card fraud instances.

So following that merchant's logic, they would also need to ask you to upload ID if purchasing online, and yet they don't.
