I was thinking about starting up my son's(16) credit , not certain if I'm actually going to give him a card yet but would like to make him an authorized user. When I add him does he get the entire history of my account or does his history begin the day of being an authorized user. My thinking is if he gets the entire history I can wait another year til he's 17 and a half if it's the other way I suppose I should add him sooner then later. Thanks
IME the entire history was transfered to the AU. I did this for my daughter a few years ago. Might want to think twice about giving your son the card!
actually its depends, i'm AU on both my sister and my parent cc, yet chase wont report me as AU . Thats why my AAoA only 2 years instead of 10 years or 6 years like my sister.
I am 20 years old and have been piggybacking with my grandmother since 2010 (on a 2007 aged account) by being an authorized user on one of her credit card accounts. Because of her, I have a ~7 year credit report, the scores I do (in my signature), and was just approved for an Amex Blue Cash Preferred with a $5,800 line of credit @ 12.99% this weekend under my name - my first card. ![]()
Also, yes his credit report will revert to the oldest age of whichever account he is authorized to use. It's doesnt age from the date you sign him on.
At the very least, I would definatley add your son as an authorized user, and keep the actual card to yourself if you are worried he may over-use it.
I added my grandmother as an authorized user on my Amex card, and she added me on her second credit card after I was approved for my Amex. We have very similar credit reports now.
