I have two cards I want to put my wife on to help build her credit. She has no credit.

-Local Bank card with 500 limit (Maxed out)

-Capital one car 500 limit (Maxed out)

I am planning on paying both these cards of this week. Should I add her as a AU before or after the pay off to help her gain credit?

Thank You!

Re: Authorized User

not sure what your credit score is but if it's above 720 go to Macy's in person and get a JOINT account made =)

They won't even pull her credit if yours is 720 or above and you'll get 2 trade lines one for store and one amex for outside the store.

Re: Authorized User

Don't get an joint account, why would you get a hard inquiry?
1-Pay off the balance
2- add her as an au
3- let her apply for a cc (best bet with cap)

You guys really over rate hard inquiries effects. Yes it does hurt your score. but my last app spree you know what it costed me? 2 whopping points. Even after 120 hard inquiries in a year people can still maintain a 760 score. It does have a limit to how much it can damage your score.

Why get a joint account?

1. Cause they're married he should want to help her

2. you get 2 accounts for 1 hardpull between two people as long as his score is 720+

3. her credit doesn't even get factored in which allows her to skip capital one cards which are subprime and straight into primesville.

4. primeville = great cards in the closer future which with lucrative bonuses can get a free second honeymoon.

my parents friends just got back from a 1 all expense paid trip to bora bora. Free flight, free hotels for being in primesville.

Hard inquiry to your credit report is like a mosquito bite not a shark bite. Of course it still sucks if you get bitten 120 times, but don't think it's going to kill you either. 720+ is A+ with majority of lenders, and some require 760+ but that just means you need to change banks.  Everything past 720 is just vanity.

Re: Authorized User

My score is 610 b/c of high UTI and 3 new accounts.

I am working on this and am in the garden until the end of the year.

By the end of the year I should have all my CC PIF.

I love the idea about the macys card. At the end of the year I should have a good enough score to app for the macys card with my wife.

Thank you for everybodys help.

One last question, Should I only add her to one card right now or all 3? and which card should I put her on?

There is no reason to wait, as the score after you pay off your maxed cards will be exactly the same regardless of when you added her.    I suggest you do it now as it may take a month or two before they report.   No reason to not add her to any account assuming there is no bad past history.
