Hi! I have a BOA that was a year old in Dec 2009. I think I have read before that normally you have to call to unsecure it...and if they do it's a hard...Is that still the case?
Do they ever unsecure on their own and give you a cli?
Also I remember reading that you should do a product change but I know many have said that the reps say now it can't be done at the same time..is that still true? and if you do the product change what do you recommend going to?
Thanks!!
just went through it, you do have to call. Make sure you have no historical issues with BofA on other TL's. They DO blacklist regardless of current account status. In other words, if you had a CO or 90/120 day lates with a different BofA account in the past, they will deny you. If that's the case save yourself the hard inquiry and don't bother calling.
I had an old CO on another BofA card in 2004, PIF shortly afterwards. Current secured BofA card, 14 months current payments, 2 checking, savings accts with the bank balances in the 6 figures, they still denied me.
well update to my BOA issue/drama. I chatted online was told no hard, spoke 2 1 rep adv no hard, then had to transfer me. She said there would be a hard, I'm like what?? and we went back and forth..Then she was like well you have a BK from 2004 and we dont offer a BOA unsecured product if your BK is at least 7-10 years..I was like WHAT!! It would have been nice to know that. I hadn't heard that, so I was like fine send me my deposit close my account and I can put my security deposit in a CD or something. Then she started asking me why we filed BK and I told her but was thinking what did it matter what I said, she said that was BOA policy...
But then she was like, well your pymt history is great, low or no balance and your credit report looks great..I wanted to say so what does it matter, but i was nice even though I was MAD
Has anyone else run into this? I would have never set the account up if I had known I had no chance of getting an unsecured product for a few years..
WHAT A JOKE!
i started a thread on this same issue in the last couple of weeks. my bofa fully secured card was a year old on december 30, 2009. i called on that date to the secured department and they said they put in my request and I would get a decision letter in the mail within 14-20 days. i asked her, "isnt it an instant decision?" she said no, the request would be sent to a credit analyst and a decision would be made then.
then on the morning of january 5, on my drive to the office, i got a call from a toll-free number (it was the # for the secured department) and it was a rep who identified himself as a credit analyst from BofA. he said he was calling regarding my request to unsecure. he said he had some questions about the 3 charge-offs on my account from 2005. I explained that i was going through a tough time but that he can see from my report that i have been good before and after 2005. he said that i had "excellent payment history" and that the charge-offs were no problem and that he was going to "graduate" me. i said THANKS! and we both hung up.
i still havent received the check or the letter in the mail. i called in on january 8 to the general customer service line on the back of the credit card and spoke to a very friendly woman my age (she said she was 27 too after i confirmed my DOB). i asked for a product change and she said "sorry, it's a secured card." i said "it's not anymore...it unsecured on the 5th." she looked further and said "oh, you're right! which card were you thinking of?" and i said "amex or bankamericard rewards" and she said "no problem, let me take a look..." and she came back to say "sorry, you need to call back when you get your collateral in the mail because by that point, our systems will fully reflect it as an unsecured product. rigtht now the system i would use to change your product still thinks its secured." and i said sure no problem.
i called back to the regular customer service line on the 11th and spoke to CSR about a product change and he then transferred me to sales. i hung up and called again. the CSR again transferred me to sales after requesting a product change, so i said "wait wait, don't transfer me" and told him "be straight up with me, can i do a product change with you? why are you transferring me to sales?" he was honest and said that their internal policy changed on doing product changes for "emerging products." emerging products are bofa credit cards for customers with non-prime credit, ie people with secured or recently secured cards. they will not change your card from the "emerging credit" category until your credit reports improve to the point that you are considered a PRIME borrower (no BK, no baddies, etc). so i would have to apply for the card i want and cannot have it changed until my credit improves.
so i said ok i'll just stick with the platinum plus. then, yesterday (the 12th) i used the online customer service chat to request a product change. the rep types "which card would you like?" i told the rep what i wanted, then after five minutes of no response, the rep typed "ok Mr. ****, your product change has been approved. please wait 4 to 6 weeks to receive the card in the mail."
i called in this morning and the rep told me over the phone that the product change has indeed been approved and explained a lil more about the rewards i would get.
and FYI, i have NOT received a soft or hard hit as a result of my unsecuring or product change requests on ANY of my reports. you've got to understand one important principle of human nature: when you ask creditors "are you going to do a hard inquiry on my report?" it's like asking your prospective employer at the end of an interview, "oh hey by the way, are you going to check my criminal history?"
it arouses suspicion and the answer to that question will almost certainly be "now that you bring it up, yes...we will check your credit report/criminal history."
so, there you go.
thanks emartin82! but at least you can get a non-secure card. I'm told as long as I have a BK on file the only card I can keep is what I have, the secured card..I'm wondering if this recently changed but I thought in the past I had read others who had a past BK and were able to unsecure and also do a product change..
At this point if BOA doesn't want to unsecure me and keep my business that's fine. I have USAA, NFCU and a few other store cards so I don't necessarily need them..
Just wondering of others experience
i know how frustrating it can be...this has nothing to do with your BK; it's just BofA reps who have no idea what they're talking about because you are RIGHT, there are tons of people out there with BKs who have gotten unsecured.
where did you call into? did you call directly into the secured department?
is it one of your oldest accounts? If I were you and it helps the AAoA, I would leave it and just use it every other month for a bill or something and pay it off immediately. That way it does not lower your score closing it out and lowering the AAoA.
If its not one of your oldest then close it.
WOW!! so do I have an update to my story...So I fumed about my previous post and decided to take it a step further. I emailed some of the customer relations people at BOA this afternoon, by the time I got home at about 6pm I had a super lady leaving a message. I waited a while and decided to call and spoke to her. She was the manager of the secured department and I'm assuming some higher up referred my email to her. So get this..They unsecured my card, increased my credit line from $1300 - $2000, are mailing back my $1300 and also having the inquiry removed or changed to soft on my credit report. I keep my same account # etc...I asked her about a product change but she stated her dept doesn't do that so I guess I'll wait a few days and then call the regular # to hopefully get that done!!
I am still in shock I think. I can't believe everything has gotten rectified!! Persistance pays off!
