I think it's impossible to guarantee that I will keep the same card number. Customer service said that there is about a 50/50 chance and there is no way to control or predict whether the card number will change.
I know that there are other types of workarounds to handle the card number change, some merchants will auto-update, etc. But I just really really really really really don't want to deal with that. I have my reasons.

Honestly if keeping the same number is that important I simply woudn't risk it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I agree with @UncleB above- but I sucessfully PC'd a BoA TR to a UCR in February - and kept the same card number. The CVC and Expiry Date changed obviously.
Hasn't been a problem for me so far with PCs as the payment network has been the same for the old and new cards but there will definitely be a change if the payment network changes as part of the product change i.e. Visa -> Mastercard or Mastercard -> Visa, as the 1st digit of the card # indicates which payment network the card uses (Mastercard == 5, Visa == 4).
Go for the upgrade if it has value to you. Don't get attached to numbers.
I used to care about card numbers. However, I had fraudulent charges on my Discover, AMEX and AT&T (Citi) Mastercard. Fixing the issue required number changes.
Thanks @coldfusion ! Have you ever tried P/Cs between "levels" of a payment network, e.g. Visa Signature vs. Infinite?

Not with BoA (i.e. haven't done a Premium Rewards-> Premium Rewards Elite PC) but I have with Chase with CSP-> CSR and when they converted all UA Club cards from Visa Signature to Visa Infinite. Expiry date and CVV changed but in both cases the 16 digit account # remained unchanged.
When I did a BoA PC, from BankAmericard to Customized Cash Rewards, it upgraded from Mastercard to World Mastercard - and the number didn't change.
As long as you stay on the same network you can keep the card number. Bank of America has MasterCard and Visa versions of most of their core cards and you can switch between them by your choice or the banks. Also some cards come in AmEx versions. My first CC with BoA was a MasterCard and then they changed it to a Visa. The BoA system is almost as flexible as Chase's and in the case of networks it is even more so.
Is the reason that you want to keep your number the same because your real name is "Jenny" and the last 7 digits of your credit card number are 8675309?
