Balance Transfer: Avoiding interest on charges

I got a Barclays NFL Extra Points card last week, app'd for the specific reason of using the 0% interest for 15 mos. for BTs mades with 45 days of account being opened - I want BT the $3780 balance on my Prosper loan and pay it off in the 15 mos. instead of the 26 remaining monthly payments w/11% APR. The card also came with the offer of $100 cash back rewards for charging $500 within the first 3 months, so I charged $520 before making the BT request today. 3% BT fee was $113, so the cashback rewards pretty much offsets that.

I know from the CARD Act that CC companies must apply payments toward the highest interest balances first, and in reading through Barclays Terms they say that's what they do. So my question is: If I pay $633 after statement cuts can I count on that being all applied toward my $520 purchase balance + $113 BT fee and not being charged any inerest?  Or should I pay $673 to be on the safe side - $520 purchase balance  + $113 BT fee +$40 for the 1% minimum payment for the BT Balance? Interest rate is 19.9% on purchase balances, so I want to make sure I avoid that.

The minimum will go to the lowest rate anything over goes to higher APRs, you need to refer to the cars T&C to see exactly how they allocate payments. In the future what I suggest you do as its what I do is first meet the bonus spend, pay it off then initiate the BT and I then SD the card till the BT is paid off.

Re: Balance Transfer: Avoiding interest on charges

In most cases Barclay doesn't charge interest on new purchases even with an active balance transfer balance if you pay your purchase balance in full. If this is true for your offer you would pay your purchase balance plus your balance transfer fee. If your purchase balance is over the minimum you shouldn't have to pay anything additional but it would be helpful in reducing your balance transfer balance. Definitely check the terms of your offer to be sure.

I left a detailed answer here:

In a nutshell, Barclay will tell you exactly how much you need to pay to avoid interest.

Yeah. patience has never been my strong suit. Smiley Sad But also I will be app'ing for a mortgage pre-approval and I wanted that Prosper loan to be PIF ASAP as the 1% minimum payment required on the Barclay will be 1/4th the Prosper monthly installment loan, a big help to my DTI.

My T&C says min payments will be applied at their discretion, payments over min will be applied to highest APR balance. I just logged in & checked, the $520 bonus spend purchases made last Friday are showing as temp authorizations, they should be fully posted tommorow and I'll go ahead and PIF so there's no question. My BT request also shows a temp authorization, but not the BT fee. Pretty sure they have to issue & mail a check for the BT, as when I selected "Loan BT" tab it asked loan#, lender name & mailing address, so that should take a day or two to process.

EDIT: Thanks a bunch, onstar!  (My first statement will tell me exactly how much I need to pay to avoid an interest charge. I just checked an old statement on my Barclay Rewards card when it had a BT balance and I see that.)
