Had a conversation with BofA and was told they don't have pre-approvals only preselected... Good thing to know for people like me who don't wanna risk HP for a denial
Bank of America: Hi, I'm a Bank of America specialist and can answer questions you may have about the credit card application. |
You: IF IT SAYS WE RECOMMEND WHEN I LOGGED IN, IS THAT PRE APPROVAL? |
Amanda: Hello! My name is Amanda, an Advanced Client Solutions Specialist located in Lincoln, RI and I can help answer any questions regarding your online application as well as ensure you are maximizing your benefits with Bank of America. Before we get started may I please have your name? |
You: Anne |
Amanda: Thank you for chatting with me today Anne! Great question, many applicants ask about that! A recommended or pre-selected card would imply that our marketing department saw information that indicated that the product could be a good fit for you. The recommendation is a separate matter from the application and approval process. |
You: I understand, what I'm asking is the verbiage because there's 'Recommenced offers' and there's 'we invite you to apply' |
Amanda: I understand. Thank you Anne. We actually do not provide pre-approvals. |
You: Got it. If I haveTravel Rewards, can I switch it to Cash Rewards? |
Amanda: There are a couple of options. To see if it's possible to change your existing card, you may contact Card Services at 1.800.732.9194 or you may apply for a new card online. However, changing your existing credit card would not allow you to take advantage of the introductory promotions. |
You: That's fine, I'm more interested on the 3% rewards that I can choose from |
You: Thanks, I'll call that number |
Amanda: You are very welcome! |
Amanda: Is there anything else I would be able to assist you with today? |
You: No that will be all. Thank you! |
Amanda: It was a pleasure assisting you today! Thanks for choosing Bank of America, have a great day! |
The agent has exited the chat. |
Thank you for sharing, looks like we are on the same wavelength today.
You're welcome!! I wanted to see if my husband is gonna allow me to apply for him but he said no so I didn't pursue but wanted to know if it's even possible. In the end I just switched my current to Cash Rewards to get the 3% CB

I think you got a dumb rep. Their prequalify page is:
https://secure.bankofamerica.com/secure-offers/public/customizedOffers/

No , the rep isnt dumb. Boa prequal page is useless marketing. If you say you are interested in balance transfer, they will recommend their bt card. Want cash, no suprise, their cash back card. If you get approved off that page just means your credit was good enough to get approved for that card
Isn't that what you wanted? They do a soft pull just like every other pre-qualify page works. Personally, I got no offers.

No, you would like most prequalify pages to actually have substance, ie Amex , Cap One, or Discover. Boa doesnt sp your credit and even if they did their prequal page means nothing because they are not true offers for credit.
Aren't they all? Who offers without a hard pull?
Applications from Amex preapprovals are not actually guaranteed to be approved and there could be a hard pull, but the odds are in your favor that you will be approved without a hard pull.
Most prequalification pages from other banks so a soft pull, and if you prequalify, you have a pretty good chance for approval.
BoA doesn't do that. Their prequalification page is just a marketing scam and the result doesn't mean anything in terms of your approval chances, as AverageJoesCredit mentioned. I've wasted a HP on them, so I know now!
