Barclay Rewards Denial

Hello All,

I applied online for a Barclaycard Rewards MC and received the 7-10 notification. I called the 24/7 number for a recon and spoke to a very polite CSR. She asked for my annual income, employer  and length w/ current employer. She came back and asked me about my negs (what took place in 2010?) I went over my history (unemployment... blah blah...) Final decision was, my positive credit history needs to be substained longer to be approved. She advised I try back later. I'm slilghtly, dissappointed but I was approved for QS and a Discover it this week. My only recent good credit is coming from my secured FNBO  starting in Sept 2015. I would like one more card, but I'm pretty sure I'm on the blacklist for Chase cards. My current scores are  EQ 630 TU624 EX 638. I will be applying for a car loan in May and would love to get my scores around 680.

Re: Barclay Rewards Denial

Barclays is inquiry sensitive so they might not have liked that you opened 2 new cards this week. If they ultimately decline you and recon doesn't work you can apply for their Apple Rewards card and see if you get approved for that. After a while you can try to PC it to the rewards card

Re: Barclay Rewards Denial

I'd just use your new cards, build history and retry barclay in a few months. I don't think an apple rewards is much easier to get than the normal rewards, but I could be wrong. Either way I don't suggest more apps right this moment. You have a good start with QS and discover.

Re: Barclay Rewards Denial

I'd skip this card all together.  This was one of the first cards I got as my credit started rebounding, and although it definitely helped in my journey, it has become obsolete.  You already have enough credit to start establishing good history.  If I were you, I'd stick with what you got until you're able to get better cards.

BarclayCard - Rewards MC - 5,000 | Amex - Skymiles Platinum - 18,000 | Chase - Freedom - 3,000 | Chase - Hyatt - 5,000 | Amazon SC - 3,800 | Fidelity AMEX - 17,000 | Chase - Ritz - 10,000

Re: Barclay Rewards Denial

That's pretty solid advice. The rewards card is good at first but since you already have pretty good cash back cards it seems kind of pointless to get it. Build your credit with what you have now and go for better cards later. The only reason I got it is because I want to get an arrival soon

Re: Barclay Rewards Denial

Barclay's is inquiry sensitive. You can skip Barclay's IMO coz it grows slower than other cards like the Discover IT or CapOne QS. Also, there's no easy option for SP CLI unless you call for Apr reduction which is a headache I don't want to deal with. You get TU fico from Discover that updates more frequently and the 0.5% difference for gas, groceries and utilities is not a big deal compared to QS 1.5% cash back IMO.

Thanks eveyone for the replies. I actually, applied for the Discover card after the Barclay denial. I will sit tight with my QS & Discover and continue to keep my balances low and pay off monthly. Ideally, I will apply for an AMEX or Barclay in the fall.
